Fountains Abbey, near Ripon in North Yorkshire, one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England, it definitely has to be included on my 'favourite places' list.
Still a breathtaking site, even in it's present ruinous state – but just imagine how it must have looked in its prime!

The ruins of Whitby Abbey

It's are among the most celebrated sights of North Yorkshire. The first monastery here, founded in about 657, became one of the most important religious centres in the Anglo-Saxon world. In 664 it was the setting for the Synod of Whitby, a landmark in the history of the Church in England. The headland is now dominated by the shell of the 13th-century church of the Benedictine abbey founded after the Norman Conquest.

Just a few miles downstream from the historic city of Durham, the romantic ruins of Finchale Priory.
The priory is associated with St Godric, who lived on the site as a hermit from 1112. The actual Benedictine Priory was established some years later in 1196. The remains are today in the care of English Heritage.
It's such a beautiful spot, even on an overcast day like today.

The view from Embleton Bay on the Northumberland Coast to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. The castle was originally built by one Earl Thomas of Lancaster, completed in 1322. The location makes good use of an outcrop of the Great Whin Sill, a volcanic geological feature that underlies a great part of the region.

New experiences come with the new job. This afternoon and evening I was part of a supply trip out to a ship in Falmouth Bay. Cold but lovely views and we had dolphin visitors both on the way and the way back in the dark. Also some lovely views of the sunset over Helford River and the moon over St Mawes Castle.
