Very proud of this paper that was led by a wonderful postdoc in my lab, Iva Lučić. My first paper without any channels, I think.

Gene silencing, while highly useful, has limitations in how specific it can work. Meanwhile, DNA enzymes (DNAzymes) are so accurate they can pick out incorrect alleles in RNA sequences.

But the usage of these is curtailed by their low activity due to needing high environmental magnesium.

Now, researchers have developed a targeted DNAzyme without this problem, able to target disease-causing genes.

We know about (and have been using) oil-eating microbes for a while now. But figuring out how exactly this biochemical breakdown works is key to expanding usage into more and broader options.

Scientists at the Brookhaven National Lab have identified the structure of the enzymatic reaction that breaks the carbon-hydrogen bond of alkanes found as major constituents in petroleum products.

Materials & Methods

Cell Isolation: This is the process of separating cells from a tissue sample. It is usually done using to break down the tissue and then filtering the cells out.

3-Dimensional Culture: This is a type of where the cells are grown in a three-dimensional environment, rather than in a flat layer. This allows the cells to interact with each other in a more natural way.
