I am part of a team (headed up by Cliff Ando) to produce a new edition of the epigraphically preserved Roman statutes (an updated version of Crawford RS, in effect), and it has been SO GOOD to get back to this sort of super detailed, empirical research/writing after a long stretch of "big picture" and "high concept" work. Historians need to keep all of those (very different) muscles in shape!

There are a good number of people I follow who were active briefly late last year/early this year who've dropped out but a large number have joined since and the overall tone is very positive, in my experience. An ostrakon fragment with ancient Greek script recording money payments by several individuals. From Thebes, Egypt, dated about 100-200 CE. Broken bits of ceramic were often used as receipts.

We used to think Euskera was mainly non-written and the first samples dated from the 10th century. This makes it the first record of written Euskera, from 150 BC!

WHAT is going on here? Tilting! Maybe the sculptor needed glasses, as this funerary altar is dedicated to the 'oculist doctor' ('MEDICO OCULARIO'), C. Terentius Pisto, who lived ... 87 years, 5 months, 24 days and 10 hours. 😳

An ancient eye doctor. 🤓 Found on the Esquiline, it's also dedicated to his wife, Tula Secunda, and was 'placed by his freedmen Helius and lanuaria, who prepared the tomb also for themselves and posterity'. 1st c. CE, Baths of Diocletian. #archaeology #epigraphy
