Good morning Lovelies! Happy Eponalia!
December 18th is the feast day of Epona, the Gallo-Roman Goddess of horses. 🙏🐎 Epona was the first deity on my shrine, when I became a Pagan in 2005.
This piece is from 2018, one of the first cards I painted for Tarot Equus. 5 years on I might re-do, even just to see how far my artwork has evolved.

„Popular as #Epona was on the Continent and in Britain, there is no evidence of her in #Ireland and little in #Wales, where, however, we find the horse goddesses #Macha and #Rhiannon respectively.“

Women had a powerful influence in #Celtic society - some were skilled horsewomen & fighters who were kept back in battle so that their skills could be passed on. #Epona & #Rhiannon were powerful goddesses associated with horses ....

„#Epona was sometimes linked, like other mother goddesses, with images of death. She was depicted with the funerary bird, the raven, or with that #Otherworld creature, the dog; or she carried keys, suggesting her power to open the entrance to the Otherworld. She may have been seen as a companion or guardian on the trip to the next world.“

Epona is a Gaulish name, meaning 'Great Mare', and it's thought that she and her horses guided the soul in the ride to the afterlife. There are many parallels to the Welsh Rhiannon. Dedications to the goddess come from throughout the empire. 2/

„Little is known of the goddess #Epona except that she was connected with horses. Her name means “horse,” from the Gaulish epos, and she was depicted astride a horse (usually a mare), surrounded by horses, or even occasionally lying naked on the back of one.“

#Epona is a continental #Celtic and British goddess. Among the #Celts, „whose vision of divinity was so polytheistic that the same name of a god or goddess is rarely found more than once, Epona is an exception, for statues and altars to her have been excavated across continental Europe, the center of her worship, and in Britain—more than for any other god or goddess of the #Celts.“

Happy #Eponalia, everyone! December 18th is the traditional feast day of the Celtic goddess #Epona, protector of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. The Romans adopted her worship, particularly the cavalry (of course!). 1/

Roman soldiers brought #Epona back to Rome, „for she is the only #Celtic goddess granted a feast day (December 18) there. She is, however clearly not Roman, for there were no such equestrian goddesses in their pantheon. Often Epona carried a plate, called a patera; sometimes she bore symbols of abundance, like sheaves of wheat and ears of grain, a serpent, or a cornucopia.“

80 carriages later I return home. All kinds of horses, donkeys, mules, mini horses, and ponies. Everything from a tiny single pony pulled cart to a six huge working horse carriage/trolley. Kiddo and I cheered for each equine, bolstering their spirits in the cold. They did Epona proud.

The Goddess Epona is one of the most well-known from the Keltiké, but She was not always called exactly that.
One of the most striking variations of Her name comes from Apuleius' novel The Golden Ass, where he tells a story about a shrine to "Hippona" that was kept inside a stable. This variant is clearly influenced by the Greek word ἵππος (híppos) 'horse'.
Other known variants of Her name include EPHONA, YPONA, and even EPANA.
Besides the theonym proper, there are also theophoric personal names such as Épponus, Epponina, and Eponeilus. Interestingly, a Galatian theophoric name, Ἐπόνη, preserves the Celtic spelling and pronunciation in spite of its Hellenized context (in contrast to Apuleius).
