@emacsen As to #ErinOToole, the most cutting criticism within the party was neither that he was too right-wing, nor that he was too centrist. His biggest problem was a perception that he was trying to have things both ways. (I've posted many links on this recently; the #PaulWells one is probably best.)

Of course, if he had done better in the last general election, all would have been forgiven. Doing worse than #AndrewScheer, who had a poor campaign, made the knives come out.

What do I think? I 'm not sure. #ErinOToole isn't winning plaudits from me at the moment; but I'm not sure how he should have handled the #convoy , and I don't see who would be better as a replacement leader.

What went right?

"The Conservatives saw their share of the vote increase in six provinces, including Ontario and Quebec, and they won more seats in four provinces — Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador."

Thus if the question is, "How can the Tories win next time?" then it makes sense to keep #ErinOToole .

Relatedly, I recently had a discussion with a fellow criticising the #Conservatives for being misleading about their actual policies in the recent election. For instance: #ErinOToole says he's pro-choice, claimed my interlocutor, but he's really in favour of restricting #abortion . But he's always said he's pro-choice, I replied. He ran for the leadership as such. How do you know he's pro-life? Because he's a Conservative, and Conservatives are pro-life.

Personally, I can live with the centrist policies, but Mr. O'Toole's willingness to bend to the desires of the government of #Québec distasteful. Québec should cancel its own income tax system, not take over federal collection. The law about religious garments is foolish, etc.

If I understand correctly, #ErinOToole is promising a review of what #firearms the Canadian public is allowed to possess.

I'm no expert in the topic, but here's my personal view:
* Firearms and components should be banned that are especially dangerous;
* Firearms that merely look scary should not be banned.

As I understand it, people use the term #AssaultRifle to refer to guns that look scary, some of which are especially dangerous and others which are not.
