I travel internationally often enough that unpleasant encounters with border officers wondering why I'm nervous have become a real annoyance. I've printed some business cards now to attempt to cut these encounters short - we'll see if it works... #essentialTremor
At #NCMVic23 our lab is represented by PhD student Hantao Wang. It's Hantao's first in-person NCM so please say hi if you see him! Stay tuned for info on his poster 4-F-53 on our use of #DBS with sensing capability (patients with #Parkinson Disease or #EssentialTremor).

Another entry in the endless list of m encounters with "perceptive" border guards, this time in Chiasso (CH) going to Italy. "I can see that you're agitated", please open all your suitcases while the train waits, etc #essentialTremor
If you are interested in doing a post-doc on essential tremor (we have an active project that includes both PD and ET patients) consider this funding opportunity from the International Essential Tremor Association:

In the year 2023, a phone had all it needed to be a perfect scanner, but document recognition and normalization software was still lacking. This primitive apparatus allowed its operator to digitize paper documents despite having #essentialTremor
In Torino, finalizing the acquisition of an apartment for my in-laws. The notary insisted I write my overly long middle name in a legible way, many times, not just a signature scribble, with seven people watching me. What are you even supposed to do here as an #essentialTremor person? Email them ahead of time that you can't do that?
My main problem with #essentialTremor is that it inspires security personnel at airports to ask me "WHY ARE YOU SO NERVOUS", and I suspect Fauzi et al's solution may not totally get them off my back
Does anyone have any #keyboard recommendations for someone (me) with fine motor #disability ?
I have #EssentialTremor and am experiencing worsening pain and coordination issues making typing, among other things, difficult.
Typing is really important to me, so if you're someone who makes #MechanicalKeyboard s for fun or something I will totally buy something off of you, especially if you had an extra ergo split one or something lying around.

My current understanding of how Deep Brain Stimulation for #essentialTremor works: I'm shaking, so _somewhere_ in the brain there's a signal corresponding to that. We make an educated guess, and then we poke around to find the best spot to jam this signal with an implanted electrode.
(It took me a while to wrap my head around how we don't know the mechanisms and still are able to suppress it, but apparently that's a thing medicine as a field just does)
It's weird how the areas of science I'm interested in feel almost saturated with research, hyper smart people looking at them from a dozen angles at once, while the areas I want someone else to figure out for me ( #EssentialTremor ) feel like there's just like two serious researchers but they work on it only sometimes when they have time on weekends.
