Esztergom, 1972. The remains of the Mária Valéria bridge across the Danube, that once joined Hungary and Štúrovo in what is now Slovakia. Destroyed in 1944 by the retreating German army, it remained unrepaired for decades, mostly due to tensions between Hungary and the then Czechslovakia.(Štúrovo, or Párkány in Hungarian, was/is largely made up of ethnic Hungarians.)
The bridge was reopened in 2001 having been rebuilt with EU funds.
