đ˘#OutNow in #OA: '#Folktales of #Mayotte, an #African Island' by Lee Haring, foreword by Mark Turin.
The book uncovers the versatility and literary skills of #oralnarrators in a small #African island. Relying on the researches of three #French #ethnographers who interviewed #storytellers in the 1970s-80s, Lee Haring shows a once-#colonised people using #verbal #art to preserve ancient values in the #postcolonial world, when the island of #Mayotte was transforming itself from a neglected #colony to an overseas department of #France.
The authorâs innovation is to read #ethnographic researches as #play scriptsâto see printed folktales as accounts of live #performances.
#Literary specialists, #folklore enthusiasts, and people who like #reading stories will find much to appreciate in this engaging and sophisticated book.

I finally got #EthicsCommittee approval for my little #ethnographic #research study that I want to run alongside my main project. Itâs some #ParticipantObservation of the charity environment Iâm based in most days. I basically sit and chat with the clients most of the time, so I figured I might as well write the experience up as an actual study - I learn a lot from my conversations thatâs worth recording #fieldwork #criminology

For my degree, I did a #qualitative, #ParticipantObserver #Ethnographic study of alternative club culture.
I want(ed) to document all the tiny subcultural facets of #greb #clubbing because, when I went to the journals - there was pretty much nothing. There was some stuff about #hardcore and #StraightEdgePunk but that was pretty old.
I feel sad that a subculture that is such a part of many people's identity isn't documented more.

From my research archive, a fascinating instance of popular #ethnographic knowledge from 14th-century Spain: this appears to be a reference to the Jewish diaspora in India.

#ThrowbackThursday Earlier this year, one of our PhD's @branwen_p@twitter.com went to Ghana for fieldwork đ There she did #ethnographic research, looking at dynamics of #knowledge exchanges between local & migrant #farmers. One of the methods she used was this associations exercise đ

@d2ns I'm all for open access but I do think #openpeerreview isn't really realistic. It's hard enough for journals to find reliable punctual reviewers. Fewer people will be willing to review work when it means they'll invite scrutiny and critiques of their review.
#PreRegistration isn't relevant in #ethnographic work. It's far closer to the role of a deeply embedded reporter than wet lab tech.
#OpenData of qualitative runs into ethical issues. Can't publish 3k interviews about sexual assault
