In 1844, a #British swimming competition had two #indigenous #athletes (’Flying Gull’ & ‘Tobacco’) join.
‘Flying Gull’ swam the 40m length pool in just 30 sec & won.
The front crawl he used was unknown to the #Europeans.
The stroke was swiftly deemed barbaric & unrefined by the press & the Brits refused to do anything but breaststroke (& later sidestroke) until 1873.
