I've lost count of the number of conservative #evangelical Christians that I've talked to over the last decade about #ClimatePolicy, and in the course of the conversation, they affirm their understanding/acceptance of the science, their acknowledgment of the practical urgency, the cogency and power of the ethical imperative, the need for public policy changes, yet who have nonetheless refused to consider a vote for anyone but the (conservative, significantly climate-denying, pro-coal & gas) #Coalition.

The reason? One or both of two other issues they see as more important, both of which have to do with sex: namely, the legal status of #abortion and of same gender #marriage.

In the last five years, both these issues have been resolved (the former in NSW, the latter federally) by conservative Coalition governments enacting legislation to legalise them, against the deep convictions of these evangelicals.

However, I can count on one hand the number of conservative evangelicals who have told me they now intend to change their vote as a result of these moves. Despite telling me that the only reason they were voting for the anti-climate Coalition was to keep one/both of these things illegal.

There is a #NSWelection this Saturday. One more week to convince some of them...

Growing up in #LatinAmerica as an #atheist, there is no love lost for the #CatholicChurch.

Too often, it stood in the way of progress and supported repressive regimes.

Having said that, I would name 2 reasons why decline of #Catholicism might not be exclusively a good thing:

1- #Secularism is on the rise, but most are moving towards #evangelical beliefs — imho at least as toxic.

2- #LiberationTheology played a central role in social movements and popular uprisings.
