I am often reading more than one book at a time. I have been going back and forth between Saidiya Hartman's Lose Your Mother: A Journey Along the Atlantic Slave Route, and Nisi Shawl's Everfair. Lose Your Mother is far more intimate than I had at first expected; a brilliantly crafted book. is fiction, billed as science fiction, it is far more an alternative history and takes a long time in creating a not unexpected past. What they have both have in common, I have noticed, is familiar characters or personalities. I won't say more so as not to inadvertently spoil either one of them, but they are both worth reading. I keep thinking there is more I should be noticing about the familiar characters between the two books from my previous textual studies. While I am at work, my eyes keep drifting over to Paulo Freire: A Global Legacy (eds. Peters and Besley), that I have yet to begin.
