my User model has an updateUser function and i'm proposing that this func is to ONLY update the User record. someone on my team thinks it should also handle logic of sending out emails. this func is not only called from a controller as i update the User record this way in other spots in the app.
i've at least moved the new email sending stuff to its own service layer.
