FAccT: We identify harms in tech, but often the workers building this tech *don't have _power_ to fix them harms*. #FAccT2023
This questions FAccT theories of change.
At 2:30pm in W196BC in the "Workplace" session, join me+Derrick Zhen for our paper:
"Even the most impressive #AIchatbots require thousands of human work hours to behave in a way their creators want them to, and even then they do it unreliably. The work can be brutal and upsetting, as we will hear this week when the ACM Conference on #Fairness, #Accountability, and #Transparency (#FAccT) gets underway. It’s a conference that brings together research on things I like to write about, such as how to make #AISystems more #accountable and #ethical." https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/06/13/1074560/we-are-all-ais-free-data-workers/

Hi friends! Are you attending #facct next week? Come see my talk about our paper: "Diverse Perspectives Can Mitigate Political Bias in Crowdsourced Content Moderation", w/ coauthors @sukrit, Naomi Mine, and @drkuluth!
We found risk of bias when crowds label political content (e.g. for removal, etc.), that might advantage some political perspectives over others 😬
But when crowd aggregation strategies take diverse political perspectives into account, this actually _mitigates_ the bias! 🎉
Big shoutout to everyone working hard on their #FAccT proposals, reminder that abstracts are due 30th January Anywhere on Earth:
The ML bros push back less on my sociotechnical work on algorithmic fairness than the "mathematical" fairness people.
But y tho?
Why can't we appreciate each other's work and build on each other?
It's not a zero sum game bruh.

You guys, we’re about ready to officially announce the team and plans for ACM FAccT 2023 @facct #FAccT
*Superb* team of General and Program Chairs. Very cool location. In person w support for hybrid (Hopin again) as per the community‘s clear preference.
It is going to be awesome!
Hey! Here's a #introduction for a group. If you're into (academic, activist, etc) work about #fairness #accountability and #transparency in sociotechnical systems, you can follow @facct or (with v4.0) #facct. And then use that tag or # when you want to share something with others who follow. The group is slow to re-post but gets there in the end. We'll find each other on here eventually...

Really (really) excited about my upcoming Tanner Lecture on AI and Human Values (actually two lectures). Particularly honoured to have such great respondents: Arvind Narayanan, Marion Fourcade, Josh Cohen, and Renée Jorgensen. The lectures are titled 'Algorithmic Governance and Political Philosophy'. https://hai.stanford.edu/events/tanner-lecture-ai-and-human-values-seth-lazar
Trying out a turn of phrase... Philosophy is sometimes said to aim to view the world 'sub specie aeternitatis'—from the perspective of eternity. This might not be possible or desirable for political philosophy. But we can at least *avoid* viewing the world sub specie Twitteritatis... #philosophy #facct
Here’s a recent draft @facct @philosophy paper, ‘On the site of predictive justice’, written with my student Jake Stone. It argues that even if it’s more *important* to build fair societies than fair algorithms, ML researchers (and others in the prediction business) still have good non-instrumental moral reason to build fair algorithms. We develop a theory of ‘predictive justice’ which fits into a broader account of epistemic ethics. Check it out at https://mintresearch.org/PJ.pdf
Right ok: if you want to follow papers and discussion about topics related to #facct, including #computerscience #law #sts #philosophy writing about #fairness #accountability and #transparency of #sociotechnical systems, including #AIethics and #regulation of #technology then you can now follow @facct, and if you tag that handle then your post will be shared with folks following it. I think!

So how do we get groups to work? If I want to create one for #FaccT, can I just do this? @facct@a.gup.pe
@riedl @baxterkb Totally agree. I think in the absence of a critical tech instance (we are talking about spinning up a FAccT one but perhaps too much overhead) coordination around hashtags seems to be really crucial for discovery. I've been using #facct #philosophy #technology #AIEthics and #responsibleAI also good, but if we don't standardise it will be hard...

Every time I write an introduction for literally anything I find myself using the word 'increasingly' and remembering @KLdivergence taking the mick out of #facct papers *all* using this word in every intro and abstract. #philosophy
Though the weather there wasn't quite so conducive, #Princeton was also beautiful, and it's always good to talk #philosophy and #facct with the brilliant scholars there. Had a packed house for my talk on algorithmic governance in the Centre for Human Values. And got to take some pictures in the in-between bits.
@jwyg @chanders @jeanburgess @nancybaym I think co-design workshops would be really useful in this context—if you do one at AoIR let us know how it went, may emulate at #facct
New instance, new chance to share #photography and #philosophy. Gave a talk at Cornell Philosophy (with many #facct afficionados around too) this week. So excited to see the famous gorges. They didn’t disappoint. These are from the Cascadilla trail (which is quite hard with a wheelie bag… at least I went downhill).

The non-additivity thesis—a core contribution by intersectionality scholars—is particularly relevant to #FAccT topics: intersectional oppression is more complex than, and qualitatively distinct from, the *sum* of various individual axes of disadvantage.
