Seen on the #Brenner railway line in May 2002: an #FS 🇮🇹 #ALe840 unit and its #Le640 driving trailer (both with opening windows) at #Fortezza/ #Franzensfeste station, awaiting further duties.
They were built from 1949 onwards and withdrawn around 2005.

While travelling from #Venice to #Milan in November 2002 I came across this #FS #Trenitalia 🇮🇹 class E.402A electric working an eastbound #Intercity. Back then the loco was still displaying its original red and white livery and the “logo inclinato” on its nose.

An #FS 🇮🇹 class ALe 601 unit at #Roma Termini in April 1983. These trains, composed of several sections, worked multi-destination #Rapido services like the “Peloritano” from #Rome to #Palermo & #Siracusa or the “Marco Polo” to #Venice, #Trieste & #Bolzano/#Bozen.

August 1985, while on an #InterRail tour: my first ever photo of an #SNCF 🇫🇷 #CC6500 - and my first trip on a train worked by one of these six-axle classics: from #Chambery with the #Lyon to #Milan #MontCenis. Behind the CC6552 two #FS 1st class compartment cars, followed by #SNCF #Corail 2nd class coaches.

The #FS 🇮🇹 #ETR302 #Settebello trainset is seen here at #Ancona yard. These units used to work the most prestigious trains in the country, including a #Rome to #Milan #TransEuropExpress #TEE until the mid-1980s.

Morning at #Paris 🇫🇷 Bercy station, early 2000s: arrival of an #Artesia overnight service from #Italy 🇮🇹. An #SNCF class #BB26000 #Sybic is hauling a long consist of #FS #sleeping 🛏️ and #couchette cars, the first one behind the loco being an #Excelsior sleeper.

#Luino 🇮🇹 station and yard are home to some - long withdrawn - pieces of railway history. Pictured here are a rake of former Swiss “lightweight” carriages, which terminated their career with “Ferrovie Nord Milano”, and an #FS class E.428 #quattroventotto electric from the 1930s.

An #FS 🇮🇹 class E.646 electric is manoeuvring its rake of “piano ribassato” cars at Roma Termini in April 1983. At a time when passenger cars used to be painted in dark grey, a loco in “verde magnolia” and “grigio nebbia” livery added a colourful touch to a photo.

#Eurocity #Romulus leaving #Tarvisio Centrale on its way from #Vienna 🇦🇹 to #Rome 🇮🇹. An #FS class 656 locomotive is in charge of the train as far as Venice Mestre.
This section of the #Pontebbana railway line has meanwhile been transformed into a cycling route.
