#NowPlaying The Future Sound Of London, "Accelerator" (25th Anniversary Edition). I rarely seem to reach for this one when I fancy some FSOL, which is daft, because this is actually great stuff. #FSOL #TheFutureSoundOfLondon
1991 was the year I discovered dance music, after not really playing close attention before. I had no idea what I was missing out on. The Orb's "Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld" was what finally grabbed me, but it wasn't long til others - FSOL, Orbital, etc - followed.

#FSOL 2 of 4: Sounding at times like the soundtrack to an unmade dystopian sci-fi film, Dead Cities incorporates various strains of modern electronica into its enigmatic and amorphous (androgynous?) collage of beats, samples, analogue synthesizers, and acoustic stringed instruments.
#FSOL 3 of 4: From the industrial sputter of “Herd Killings” at the beginning through the distorted synths of the title track and “We Have Explosion,” Dead Cities establishes its primary mood of oppressive, almost dystopian-sounding cityscapes. Occasional forays into more ambient, even jazzy sounds on “Her Face Forms in Summertime” do not so much lighten the emotions as quiet them down to an ominous purr.
#FSOL 4 of 4: “My Kingdom” and “Yage” bring in haunting vocals and raga drones for a more Eastern sounding take on FSOL’s industrialized brew, and “Max” goes most of the way into acoustic ambient jazz. Clattering drum and bass informs “Antique Toy” and “6:15/ Quagmire,” keeping listeners guessing as to where FSOL’s dark panorama of sounds will open up next. /

#NowPlaying My Kingdom Re-imagined by #TheFutureSoundOfLondon. The original is probably my favourite #FSOL single but somehow the re-imagined version is even better, Path 7 is awesome. Intrigued about where path/part 6 is though, seeing as the original single was parts 1-5 and this starts with path 7...

#NowPlaying Tales of Ephidrina by Amorphous Androgynous, this was way before they added the 'The' to the band name and this sounds much more like Lifeforms-era #FSOL than the later psychedelic work under the name.

There was this curious grinning pipe smoking man’s head floating about on the screen savers of the AIX systems! The screens were saved but my brainpan was fried.

First spin of Future Sound of London's Rituals, the first disc in the Environment 7 Trilogy. I am loving this record -- instantly more engaging than the previous Environment records, sonically slotting in somewhere closer to the Amorphous Androgynous and Lifeforms material than the more recent Calendar stuff.
If this is all gibberish to you: FSOL have always excelled at sound design, and have made digital/analog synthesis mashup somewhat of a signature, but I've found their recent output has moved somewhat away from that to more purely digital soundscapes. There is a ton of (possibly emulated?) analog stuff here tho, with snatches of acid breaks and samples swooshing in for a minute before receding. It's the closest to the classic sound I fell in love with I've heard in a long while.
I was watching Predator (1987) when I suddenly heard what I thought was just the beginning of a song I used to listen to a lot. It turns out that Amorphous Androgynous (Future Sound of London) sampled from the movie for the beginning of their song Liquid Insects: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyC-oxN0xNI
That audio is from around the 34 minute mark in the movie. Cool movie. Cool song. Creepy predator sound effects.

So I put on Tougher Than Leather while I was doing the dishes (as you do) and as usual I was struck by just how familiar the guitar sample is. I've always thought it was because everybody samples Kurtis Blow (including #RunDMC). But tonight I finally realized where I hear it: #FSOL's We Have Explosive. And sure enough there it is, sped up, filtered and stretched.
I've listened to these records for two decades at least and only today recognized the link. Brains are weird.
