First RPG bought (this year): This year’s first RPG purchase came a little late. Bought #FabulaUltima , a game emulating the sensibilities of jRPGs and the media inspired by them. Feels like a western take on the Japanese Tabletalk RPG Sword World.
First RPG book ever bought: Breaking theme with my answers it wasn’t a Rifts book. My group convinced me to buy D&D 3.0. Then 3.5 dropped and I was so annoyed I sold my books and bought Exalted instead. The things I do… 🤣

Fabula Ultima this week: At the start of the session, I asked if everyone was comfortable with the lack of combat last session. I've decided not to have random monster fights, which is a departure from the feel of my fave jrpg, FFX. Their response was "we did 4e without much combat-- have you met us?!?"
With that in mind, they headed into the valley. Encountered the "chronometer puffballs" (@melsonianarts's Fungi from the Far Realms), collected a couple of bags' worth... (1/?)
Whew! We finally got back to Fabula Ultima this week! All travel with some dangers and discoveries. They found an honored gravesite and paid respects appropriately, giving them a bonus on their travels. The party encountered their rivals ("Xal and Pals") on the road to Fire Valley. Reached the valley and had a fun 2 AM encounter with the salamanders and drakes they had been warned about previously. Next session: Onward to harvest some mushrooms and the legendary Fireflower! #fabulaultima
Ran a #FabulaUltima one-shot yesterday! As usual, I decided for the brazen approach, and ran the game for the first time with a table of mostly strangers, all of whom had never played the system.
It was an amazing success.
To begin with, the system absolutely delivers what it promises: everything in it, from mechanics, to abilities, to the artwork sets you up *just right* for a JRPG experience. It was, hands down, the game that most unequivocally nailed it's premise of all game I've ran.
C'è qualche giocatore di #fabulaUltima? Io no 😅
Ma da amante dei jRpg avevo in programma di fare una mia take sulle classi. Questo dovrebbe essere l'Arcanista, ma è una prima bozza. Domani ci rimetterò mano.

Finally reading Fabula Ultima and having Design Thoughts the *entire* time
Want to give a villain a cool weapon and if you kill them you get some broken remnant and if you recruit them you get the weapon itself
FFRPG 3E had a cool system where weapons etc had, like, one thing going on (or zero) just like FU but late-game "artifact" equipment could have multiple "qualifies" (FU-speak), and maybe that'd be workable
Been reading through the core rulebook for #FabulaUltima the last couple days. It's breaking my brain a bit, but I'm loving what I'm reading. It tickles a sense of nostalgia both for D&D (which I've not touched in over 15 years in favor of more narrative systems) and for the SNES-era jRPGs that I loved as a kid. It's also cool and weird how it's both more abstract than I'm used to in some ways while also being quite a bit crunchier than I'm used to in others.
So, a #FabulaUltima character isn't complete without a group and a campaign, but here's my first go at a character concept.
Rombom
free-spirited biclops without a homeland
Theme: Anger
Origin: Cyclopedia, the mountain realm, home of the cyclopes, now a prisoner camp
I want to post more often, especially about #TTRPG and #BattleTech contect. However, it is freezing outside, and life is stressful right now.
Behind the scenes, I am working on our #FabulaUltima campaign and my alternate 3067 Technical Readout for BattleTech.

@Ghastwood For #jrpg fans, #FabulaUltima is another recommendation: moderate crunch but deep coverage for various 'bits', e.g. travel, trade, healing, etc. It also puts a lot of narrative power in the players' hands and has fast, exciting combats where each PC's niche has a chance to shine.
As much as I love playing #ttrpg (we did session zero of #FabulaUltima this week) with my friends on Friday nights. It completely messed up my otherwise consistent sleep schedule for like the whole weekend. Oh well. It's worth it.
Meanwhile, without a common foe, members of the Five Nation Alliance grow restless. The flames of ambition have been rekindled. Old rivalries have resumed. Without diplomacy, the Alliance could crumble under the weight of war.
The fifth member of the group never arrived in Concordia, so the High Regent tasked the PCs with finding the missing member. They discovered that that member was ambushed and slain by brigands led by a mysterious one-eyed man in black and his mechanical skelebot. The mystery villain escaped, but the heroes were victorious. They discovered that he was send by someone to stop the adventurers from travelling beyond the Wall. What sinister force is at work?
We kicked off our #FabulaUltima #TTRPG game on Monday. The heroes are citizens of the Five Nation alliance, selected by the High Regent of Concordia to explore beyond the Grand Wall to see what became of the heroes who were sent to fight against The Incursion. They must have been victorious; there have been no sightings of extraplanar fiends in years. But they never returned home. What will the PCs discover?
I ran my first game of #FabulaUltima yesterday! I really enjoyed it.
Scenes without direct conflict were light enough to keep the focus on character interaction, and combat had a layer of crunch that focused less on "how can I be the coolest build" and more on "how can we all work together to be the best party possible."
Last night, my Monday #TTRPG group made their #FabulaUltima world and characters. Now I have a week to fill in some blanks and start the adventure. #RPG #JRPG

I am happy I found #FabulaUltima, as it looks like it will become my main fantasy #TTRPG for a while. I am also excited for #Dragonbane and #Symbaroum. If I wanted a more tactical fantasy #RPG, I still have D&D 4e books for that.

Picked up #FabulaUltima on a whim today and, it's such a neat system! I probably won't get to run anything with it for a little while, but I definitely want to give it a spin when one of my #OldSchoolEssentials #ArdenVul games wrap up.
