I never used the #birdsite much in the first place, and actually used it a bit more recently if only to witness the slow-motion #FailWhale. The latest events seem like a tipping point though. I mostly only opened it to find updates on real-time events, and hoping this can serve that role going forward.

My #birdsite account dated back to early 2007, so yes, of course I remember the #failwhale. Quite fondly, actually. I loved the comraderie that came when/after it showed. How we'd all curse it, but rather affectionately. I'm probably romantizing the whole thing but there was a time, brief as it might be, when the bird site felt like a friendly place and didn't feel so toxic. #riptwitter

OTOH I'm not so certain the birdsite's gears will grind to a halt or even just get so clogged up they make the site unusable. I think they'll have enough smart people to fix most things and they can always bring in some contractors to pick up the slack; while making sure *someone* is documenting the fixes.

But I do think the #FailWhale is coming back and there will be an initial period of system instability.

And, of course, it's possible they might keep doing stupid shit and prove me wrong.

Mastodon should adopt the Skywhale as its #FailWhale equivalent. This is my firm opinion.
