For #Falcon, #SpaceX went with the conservative choice of RP-1/LOX in their "Merlin" series of engines.
They, of course, were designing for reusability, so making this more conservative choice made a lot of sense.
And, AFAICT, no major spaceflight systems have been developed using the Methane/LOX combination that #Starship uses, but there were some awfully good reasons to consider it -- just no working engines.

[...]
But the next best thing is a 2-stage solution, and the experience with #Falcon (and also the #SpaceShuttle orbiter and also the development work from the #DeltaClipper / DC-X program) shows that if you could make that work, you might be able to reuse both pieces.
Early Space Shuttle designs also called for a liquid-fueled "fly-back booster". That design was abandoned for budget reasons. Leading to the fateful decision to use solid rocket boosters.

Anyway, back to #Falcon, #Starship, and landing on retro rockets...
Falcon, like many practical rockets these days is a 3-stage vehicle.
Efforts were made to recover the "Dragon" orbiter and also to recover the "flyback boosters", which was an IMPRESSIVE bit of engineering that #SpaceX accomplished.
They are routinely re-flying those boosters, which saves a lot on the costs of the Falcon launch vehicle.
But they throw away the middle stage. Interesting, huh?
[...]
Delta Clipper, #Falcon's booster stage, #Starship, and the less-well-known "Roton" launch vehicles were all designed to launch and land on their tail end "as God and Robert Heinlein intended", as a number of rocket engineers I know have put it.
There are a lot of good reasons for that approach. A big one is that it doesn't require as sophisticated a landing field.
That's particularly important if you have your eye on Mars, but also allows more possibilities on Earth.
[...]
Rapid prototyping, lots of tests, and learning how to solve new problems was also typical of the early rocket development programs in the 1960s.
PLENTY of rockets exploded on the pad back then.
It's also useful to mention #Falcon at this point, because a LOT was learned there to be applied to #Starship
And of course, there were earlier attempts at ideas we see now in Starship in programs like the "Delta Clipper":

[...]
Of course, whenever you cut a corner in an engineering design to cut costs, you introduce a risk that you've made a bad decision.
The only way to really deal with that is to do tests. Endless amount of simulation and workstation engineering is simply no comparison to collecting data from a working model.
And that "rapid prototyping" approach is how #SpaceX has operated. This is most obvious with #Starship , but also was a major factor in bringing #Falcon to market.

Juvenile peregrine falcon checking out the area and where to head next. Another photographer and I had noticed the #falcon on the tree and we were waiting for it to fly, and several people had noticed US, and then the bird, and so THEY were also watching. I'm sure it was getting tired of the gawkers--a few minutes later, it did fly. #Birdphotography #naturephotography #birdpics #naturephotographer #nybirding #cutebirds #photographersofmastodon #birdsofprey #peregrinefalcon

While I walked around the con, my 6' wings were folded into this backpack! I covered the outer shell of the #Falcon backpack in EVA foam scraps left over from my Commander Shepard #N7 armor build & made it resemble the movie jetpack as well as I could (there were no high res photos of it at the time). Remote control for scale lol. You can see where the PVC pipes connect to the wings. I also added lights! Here's some progression photos. #MCU #Marvel #cosplay #craft #maker
