@denspier Another country (#Argentina) which also speaks #Spanish claims the #Falklands (and invaded it in the 80s), so the British Government gets upset whenever it sees the Spanish name in Spanish documents.

March 16, 1834, HMS Beagle ⛵ anchors at the recently British-acquired #Falklands Islands. Charles #Darwin will be the first naturalist to geologize there ⚒️

One for all the Margaret Thatcher fans on Mastodon. What, nobody!? Fine.
This is from #OnThisDay in 2016 when we visited the #FalklandIslands and enjoyed a tour of the battlefields before enough time in #Stanley to explore, hit a museum, and a pub. They hold Maggie in high regards in the Falklands, but despite that the islanders are very nice people.

UK Foreign Secretary has told Argentina, "The Falkland Islands are British. Islanders have the right to decide their own future"
I wonder if the people of Scotland might be extended the same right?

@TweekySenior It's interesting comparing the fictional police force and justice system of Saint Marie with the real #Falklands one that someone here was going on about back in January.
Hi hope it’s ok but I’m volunteering at the #guernsey2023 #islandgames in July this year and was planning to post updates and photos from my involvement.
Eighteen Islands are taking place from as far south as the #Falklands and as far north as #gotland and #aland with over 2300 athletes taking part! Should be a fun time and looking forward to meeting all the visitors to #Guernsey

It's the last day of January and I've had a great month sharing life here in the #Falklands with you all. I've only been here 6 months so it was a chance for me to learn too. Most popular post (apart from laundry 🤷♀️) was on pubs! Thank you all for your engagement and support.
A treat to have two Royal Research Ships in the #Falklands at the same time. I've had meetings this morning with @BAS_News@twitter.com staff about logistics and shared environmental goals. Between them, @NOCnews@twitter.com and our homegrown @SAERI_FI@twitter.com, there's a lot of scientific effort focused here.
Postcard from the deep south - all the way from South Georgia @GovSGSSI@twitter.com. Like the #Falklands they issue their own stamps. The Falklands may seem far away, but South Georgia is even moreso. I'm determined to get there during my time here, but for now this will do nicely.
Horse race excitement from yesterday at Stanley racecourse. High summer in the #Falklands.
The sun came out, the wind dropped, and the #Falklands horse races took place at last after cancellation due to weather on boxing day. And then in the evening a live music festival as the sun set over the mountains. Glorious. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1619505649653800960
A blustery morning here, promising to improve later. If you fancy some indoor entertainment, what can you do around Stanley? One of my favourite places is the #cinema, Harbour Lights, which gets the latest releases. It's independent and has its own welcome #penguin. #Falklands
Can I contribute this rather handsome sign for people boarding their cruise ship after a day out in the #Falklands for #fingerpostfriday?
FIC, which was once known here simply as 'The Company' (not ominous at all) started off with mainly farming interests but quickly branched out to shipping, banking, store keeping and more. In 1951 FIC owned half the land area in the #Falklands and all the sheep that grazed there.
Following my thread on the Whalebone Arch, something on whales in the #Falklands today. We're lucky enough to have 15 species around our waters, including endangered sei whales. I spotted this southern right from a FIGAS flight. More from @FI_Conservation@twitter.com: https://falklandsconservation.com/whales/
The whalebone arch was reinforced with resin in 1992 and restored further by @FIMuseum@twitter.com in 2017. The UV light and salty air are tough on outdoor monuments. It's used for gatherings like carol singing. Nobody in the #Falklands today supports whaling but this is part of our history.
