Two billionaire Texas brothers whose fortunes derive from oil and gas fracking have pumped millions of dollars into rightwing media outfits that have promoted climate-crisis denialism and sent more big checks to back an array of evangelical projects and conservative Texas politicians.

The fracking billionaires Farris and Dan Wilks have each doled out millions of dollars through separate foundations over the last decade to a number of high-profile conservative and religious groups including the Heritage Foundation, Family Research Council and Focus on the Family.

“Thanks to their incredible wealth and largesse, the country as well as the [Republican] party are now feeling the effects of their aggressive brand of religiously-charged political activism,” said Darren Dochuk, a history professor at the University of Notre Dame and author of Anointed with Oil."

"The far-right populist Javier Milei rocked Argentina’s political establishment on Sunday by emerging as the leader in primary elections to choose presidential candidates for the October general election.

Milei, an admirer of the former US president Donald Trump, says Argentina’s central bank should be abolished, thinks the climate crisis is a lie, characterises sex education as a ploy to destroy the family, believes the sale of human organs should be legal and wants to make it easier to own handguns.

Votes were still being counted late on Sunday but analysts agreed that the upstart candidate, who gained notoriety – and a rockstar-like following – by angrily ranting against the “political caste”, did much better than expected and is a real contender for the presidency.

With about 92% of polling locations reporting, Milei had about 30% of the total vote, according to official results. The candidates in the main opposition coalition, United for Change, were at 28% and the current governing coalition, Union for the Homeland, had 27%."

Another features a cartoon version of the Black American educator and author Booker T Washington comforting white children by saying, “Future generations are never responsible for the sins of the past.” To which his young listener responds: “OK, I’ll keep doing my best to treat everyone well and won’t feel guilty about historical stuff.”

I've read this piece on the rise of the far-right in Florida by Sky News.

And it really is incredible how time and again the media - even outside the country involved, which usually means they say stuff they wouldn't about the exact same issues or threats in their own country - still gloss over two key names in allowing and even promoting this rise, by mentioning one of them by name, just once in it.
