A bovine giant, so mighty and large,
Her size less akin to beast, than barge.
Her udder hung low from her underbelly,
As she grazes, deep in the valley.

While we watched the sun set on the plain,
The cow stayed still as if caught in a frame.
We came to admire her grandeur and grace,
Her poise and her stature, in this bucolic place.

A bull calf so young, so small and weak
Just born in the barn, only this week
His little legs teeter, unsteady feet
As his mother watches, that first retreat.

He wobbles and stumbles, in search of a drink
He learns to try so hard, to start to think.
The herd’s pride for the year, this mother and son
Protective, as he takes his first steps, in brief sun.
