If I were going to offer to set up and admin what would likely be a smallish mastodon instance (>1000 users for sure, probably less than 100), how much time would I have to spend setting up (I'm thinking #docker on a reasonably sized #AWS instance) and then on admin tasks? #FediAdmin

it would have been nice if they had tagged this #FediAdmin and/or #MastoAdmin. Probably safe to say that "All Fediverse Admins" are not following that account.
๐ค It's interesting that the only Fediverse admins I hear complaining about the difficulty of moderation are those who choose to make large instances that don't screen their users.
Or am I missing something?
@iama I didn't want to tag in #fediadmin/#fediblock because...good god have a few people turned that stupid or what? But glad the jovial effect intended came across.
#FediAdmin Do you have notifications turned on to remind you to approve trending tags/links/posts? Many users (especially new users) like the Explore feature, so help them out.

Admins: do YOU have a "hit-by-a-bus" plan? Here's my checklist of what a backup admin should be able to access and how it looks on our server, just to establish some basic guidelines. https://out.flipping.rocks/blog/towards-hit-by-a-bus-fediadmin-best-practices ๐
I realize it's not exactly kosher but I'm thinking about extending invites to a few worthwhile accounts on the large server I will be suspending soon. Poaching or fair play?
By the way, We have joined hundreds of admins and mods across the fediverse in pledging to block Facebook/Meta-owned servers (and have already blocked a couple likely domains): https://fedipact.online/
Facebook's right-wing bias, lack of moderation, and extremely successful attempt to essentially replace the web in vast portions of the world have been disastrous for the Internet and society in general. I have also seen several cycles of giant corporations running services using open protocols and, once they've captured a big enough userbase, switching to a proprietary system and then killing it off whenever they feel like it.
A better Internet is possibleโbut not funded by ads and run for profit by a single giant evil corporation.

Yo what's that thingy for turning an RSS feed into a fedi account?
I've been meaning to set up something like that to help members keep tabs on accounts from big servers I have to silence/suspend.
(I feel like @darius might have set it up or at least know of it?)
Seems like there's some weird spam campaign in the art/photography community right now...like pretty sure it's all the same person in a spam campaign that may or may not be on behalf of the original artists. Dozens of users posting a photo with no desc, that all follow this pattern:
Generic/inspirational quote.

A Giant Block Of Tags that I'm not going to try to reproduce for the sake of people with screenreaders.
@endeavorance it honestly depends on one's goals and there's no one-size-fits-all solution.
I do think it's valuable to try to snuff out corporate servers before they get a foothold. And I've seen first-hand how coordinated defederation can get an admin to change their direction. That said, I specifically wanted this server to be usable for outreach, which is why I'd be reluctant to block such servers. I would be fine with a server I have a personal account on doing it, though.
I'm super excited that in the coming weeks, hopefully in about 2 - 3 weeks if all goes as planned, I'll be starting up my own Mastodon instance.
I'm excited, yet nervous, all at the same time. The instance will be open for others to join with approval at first as I don't want hundreds or thousands of users right away.
The domain name I'll be using is: AllThingsTech.social
I'll be looking for members to join and even a couple of moderators to help run things!

Just added a few more links to my Awesome Fedi Admin Resources list: https://codeberg.org/nev/awesome-fediadmin/
If you know of any other guides, examples, or other resources for people running their own fediverse servers, let me know!
Just started an awesome-list of resources and best practices for running a fediverse server! It's pretty rudimentary, please suggest stuff to add.

Hello! We are Revachol City, an instance started by Disco Elysium fans and themed around the game.
Disco Elysium is a game where you play an amnesiac detective with 24 headmates that represent your RPG stats and try to solve a murder. Beyond that, it's a game with heavy criticism of fascist, centrist and neoliberal ideologies, and traverses through leftism with kind and weary eyes that hold out hope while remaining critical. It's a game about being a cop who doesn't want to be a cop anymore, about being in love with a world that's dying, and about finding hope in human interaction.
I think those are values that I want to see on the fediverse, so this instance is open beyond Disco Elysium fans to anyone that believes that the best kindness you can offer someone is the opportunity to be better. That means sitting with critique and learning from it, as it upends our entire self-image.
This being said: We are antifascist. We do not tolerate racism, misogyny, queerphobia, ableism or classism, nor any of the intersecting oppressive systems. An opportunity to be better presupposes good intent, and this is no home for sealioners and devil's advocates. We defederate from bad actors and will keep doing so for as long as the instance exists.
I hope this toot and the following quote from the game summarizes what we're about. Thank you, #FediAdmin for having us.

You: But what if humanity keeps letting us down?
Steban, the student communist: Nobody said fulfilling the proletariat's historic role would be easy. It demands great faith with no promise of tangible reward. But that doesn't mean we can simply give up.
You: Even when they ignore us?
Steban, the student communist: Even then. (...) I guess you could say we believe it *because it's impossible*. It's our way of saying we refuse to accept that the world has to remain like this.
OK, here's where #FediAdmin and #Art cross over... we need to talk about file size optimization.
The upload size limit isn't a target to hit. If you can make it come out fine with a smaller size without impacting the quality before you upload, please do. It's easier on the servers and everyone's bandwidth.
Just disabled anything that looks like the "verified" symbols on most other social media sites because we just don't need that kind of support headache in our lives over custom emojo. #FediAdmin
