Okay, #Fedora #Silverblue #FedoraSilverblue.
I installed it on my children's laptops (both 12yo) and configured the parental controls to deny them the _installation_ of applications. This results in many, many requests for my password on _updates_ of applications (we're talking #flatpak here). According to them, that's highly annoying. I agree. How can I set it up so updates work without additional authentication? 1/3

Today is the day. I will dip my toes deep into #FedoraSilverblue. I really want to go all into #immutability.
#FedoraSilverblue #immutability
:blobcatwaitwhat:
Всё просто работает. Вроде бы. :blobcatlul:
Лучше, чем даже актуальный (условно?) зрелый Fedora Workstation!
Посмотрим, как на дистанции себя поведёт. Концептуально идея здравая, пусть и несколько расточительная.
*(с оговорками)
A bit late but i realized 30 seconds ago that #FedoraSilverblue is immutable. I was looking for an #immutable system and am so glad #fedora got me covered. Can't wait to install it.

Interested in making a new rpm-ostree desktop variant available in Fedora to join Silverblue, Kinoite, Sericea and Onyx?
Then you may take a look at this guide: https://tim.siosm.fr/blog/2023/06/21/rpm-ostree-variants-fedora/

I give up on #Fedora #Silverblue. It seems to be great for a general-use desktop, but for someone like me, that needs to try and test random stuff every once in a while, it's just a time consuming machine. Sadly, will have to go back to standard install.
Don't get me wrong, the idea is great though, and it taught me how to work with Flatpak properly (at least that).

I can’t be the only #FedoraSilverblue user who ran into some strange ulimit (open files, no of processes) issues all of a sudden recently. For example, podman containers not starting containers anymore that had been working nicely for months.
I was able to resolve them by modifying systemd and security configs, but I feel people shouldn’t have to delve that deep without proper reason.
@aral why use an immutable file system? I don't understand.
I tried #FedoraSilverblue a few weeks ago. It was missing a couple of packages for sound to play on the laptop I was using and it was such a pain in the arse to get it working.
It's just that I've yet to hear a good justification for it.

Just updated Fedora Silverblue before the trip to Paris. There’s something about literally running today’s operating system* that never gets old.

The more secure and safe to use if (cumulative) :
#opensource : code available (less backdoor)
reproductive: #nixos (easy infection detection)
readonly : #FedoraSilverblue #alpinelinux
can be minimalist : #alpinelinux #archlinux #nixos (less surface attack)
declarative : #nixos (no unknown states during install or system config)

So I figured out what the problem is: #Homebrew. Looks like at some point I installed something with brew that installed @python3.11 and @openssl@1.1 – that installed ca-certificates and p11-kit via #brew and those messed up my system trust store. Similar to the issue I had with systemd as it looks like brew installed systemd for something as well.
(Remember, I’m on #FedoraSilverblue – an immutable OS, so I was trying out Brew as an account-level package manager. Turn out, not a great idea.)

Not entirely sure how I did it but my openssl update had finally applied itself.
Disclaimer: I may actually have done nothing and fengshui entirely solved this or it was a glitch in the matrix.

Having my first minor problem with #fedora #FedoraSilverblue
in that an update for openssl won't...er... update.
I'm guessing I might have to rebase to Fedora 38 to solve this (???)
*End of technical jibber-jabber*
Tempted to try #FedoraSilverblue instead of #Ubuntu on my work machine. "toolbox" utility sounds great for CLI work in containers. The state of graphical apps is what I need to investigate. VM it is for now.
Either way, if the immutable variant won't suit me, this will be a good experiment to see if Fedora works for me in general.
Earlier I got a proper Secure Boot setup working on it (with unified kernel images and custom keys), so it's interesting at least from a security perspective.
I’m done with my #FedoraSilverblue on the #PinebookPro experiment (see thread).
It mostly works (& well).
I don’t have audio from the speakers (layering the pinebookpro-audio-2-1.fc37.aarch64.rpm via rpm-ostree didn’t help) but, most importantly, I don’t have HDMI out via USB-C so I can’t use the laptop to present at #OFFDEM as I was planning to (to show Kitten* running on a $200 laptop).
Looks like it’s not just #Fedora either: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/no-more-usb-c-hdmi-out-since-linux5-18/119798
