My guess is that the average person sees capitalism like they view democracy: there are no viable alternatives.

It's also interesting how the capitalist meme co-opts language. Many associate capitalism with freedom, but that freedom is only available if you are productive. Productivity is freedom! To a hunter/gatherer ancestor, it would sound like slavery.

I think the capitalist meme is built into any species of social individuals. This could be Fermi's filter.

The "strongest" one being that a) We do not understand consciousness (true) b) It's too far away to worry.

It took about 100 years from the invention of purely theoretical binary logic of Alan Turing to everyone carrying the Library of Alexandria in their pockets.

We are not even sure you need consciousness for intelligence.

Our first #alien (albeit with human prejudices) encounter may be in a #compsci lab.

And anyone considering clever ape tricks like dead-man power switch to cage the #AI, consider that it took two philosophers (one playing AI, the other custodian)less than a day to free the demon spirit from the bottle.

In the end, unless we do something about regulating AI, we will live up to a reality that I consider to be very real.

I wanted to explore the Fermi paradox from an evolution-of-consciousness perspective.

The idea: life is very common. Complex life is fairly common. Interstellar civilizations are rare. Civilizations of sapient, social individuals fall to the "us vs them" problem, succumbing to the inevitable conflicts that climate change brings with it. As soon as they reach the industrial stage, the race against climate destabilization starts.
