..and sometimes stuff stops working. This is a cloud radar, which dropped off the network. On investigation the electronics housing below the antenna was repeatedly beeping in the manner of a PC failing to boot. Turned out to be a push-fit memory board shaken loose from its slot by the vibration of ice-breaking. An easy fix, but it took hours to find the problem.

...We installed a mast on the ice to measure turbulent fluxes of heat, moisture, and wind drag on the surface. Also solar and infra red radiative fluxes...keeping the radiometers free of frost is a never-ending job.

Apparently it's Friday, and it's just 10 days until I head off to the Arctic for the field campaign, so here's some fun from last time on the good ship Oden. 2018, close to the north pole, the Oden (home away from home) was moored to an ice floe and drifted for a month, while we made measurements of...well, everything we could.

Fossil hunting on 's Peace River for , , and .

The Peace River (Bone Valley Formation) is home to a rich mix of Eocene, Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene . The record includes everything from Megalodon, Mastodon, Sabre Tooth Cat, Dire Wolf, Giant Ground Sloth.

hunters on the Peace are two main types : divers/snorkelers and shovel-sifting. I am the latter type. I've dug my fair share of holes.

A typical North Mengen "cooking house" (vail ta) in Pomio, . Each household has one and it is where the married couple and uninitiated children live. The women in the photo are heating stones of an earth oven (svoin) and preparing taro to be roasted in it.

Food cooked in the earth oven is presented especially during ceremonial gift exchanges.

Fossil-hunting on .

In this photo, I am walking in the shallows along the riverbank, looking for teeth, bones, tusks, or other fossils.

This scenic stretch of the Peace River is home to rich Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene deposits filled with everything from megalodon to mastodon.

This same spot has yielded a wealth of small fossils over the last few seasons.

Combo and - a surface of one of the strands of the Soda-Avawatz fault zone in the eastern Soda Mountains north of Baker, CA. The striations show almost perfectly horizontal right-lateral strike slip motion. The fault cuts a probable alluvial deposit and is buried by a middle alluvial fan deposit. This is one of several fault systems cutting across the Mojave Desert that is related to Pacific-North American plate boundary slip.

A combo toot for and (1/2)

These show my stepson and I searching large spoil piles at a construction site in 's Bone Valley Formation.

The piles shown are entirely and fossils - mostly seashells, along with some corals, shark teeth, and cetacean bone bits. These piles were 10m high in some places and quite unstable - caution was required.

We found some really nice specimens.

part 6: A woman preparing her yam garden for planting.

The Mengen in Pomio plant two kinds of yam, the greater yam (Dioscorea alata, Mengen: klaip, Tok Pisin: yam) and the lesser yam (Dioscorea esculenta, M: mis, TP: mami ).

After burning, women meticulously clean the plots from all debris before planting the yam in mounds.

Parallel laminations in an eolian sand dune deposit in the wasters for this . We used to constrain the age of these deposits to ~30,000 years old. They were most likely blown off of the dry lake bed of Lake Thompson during a low stand and deposited up against high topography where we collected them.

in 's Bone Valley Formation.

This is where we hunt for fossils. Our favorite spot is the Peace River. It cuts through , , and deposits. You can find a wide variety of , from tusks to teeth.

We kayak a few miles away from civilization and have a shovel and screen picnic. It's a great way to enjoy , get some exercise, and find some interesting fossils.

This week’s - a view to the north across a strand of the Bristol-Granite Mountains zone in the Northern Bristol Mountains of the Desert. The narrow, sand decorated ridge in the middle ground is defined by a strand of this fault system. Behind you can see Soda Lake playa, the eastern Soda Mountains, and the Avawatz Mountains, which make up the high topography of the skyline. Taken while doing some surficial geologic earlier this year.
