can be fun on

Hunting for on Florida's Peace River. The Peace River is one of 's oldest "wild" rivers that cuts through old growth cypress swamps. There are rich Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene fossil deposits.

Here we are sifting for fossils in the river. We reach the sites by kayak. It can be a lot of fun on a sunny day. Fossil finds include everything from small shark teeth to big mammoth tusks (rarely).

Fossil hunting on 's Peace River for , , and .

The Peace River (Bone Valley Formation) is home to a rich mix of Eocene, Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene . The record includes everything from Megalodon, Mastodon, Sabre Tooth Cat, Dire Wolf, Giant Ground Sloth.

hunters on the Peace are two main types : divers/snorkelers and shovel-sifting. I am the latter type. I've dug my fair share of holes.

I know It isn't , I can't hold this rant for that long. Maybe it is ...

I never want to hear another story about, or see, polar hero researchers perpetuating incredibly harmful fieldwork practices.

... should have mentioned earlier - RA/ JHAs and codes of conduct can also be used as political tools, to shore up existing power structures. If you see that happening, run! No matter how cool the work. Or hire me to come and kick ass :)

...so, to recap: use RAs/JHAs and codes of conduct as supporting structures.

If your organization / team doesn't do that, I'm also available for consulting ( and permanent jobs ) on how to change ;)

...because in either scenario, functional fieldwork safety is theater, rather than a well considered, adaptable and living culture of physical, psychological, emotional and cultural safety. 4/

same if either RA / JHAs or codes of conduct are organizationally used as rigidly punitive documents, without discussion and engagement. 3/

... in 2023, if you're hearing sighs or negative jokes or seeing eyes rolling at the thought of doing RAs / JHAs or using a code of conduct, see it as an orange flag. 2/

thoughts to start 2023: Risk assessments and codes of conduct are support structures, rather than cages. Used well, both are enabling documents and their use is an empowering practice. 1/

When funding fieldwork, fund great gear - don't make new people save up!

Also cheap one-size-fits-nobody gear get you cheap one-size-fits-nobody research.

Hey !
When you were/are first starting to collect gear for doing fieldwork, what pieces of gear were/are the most prohibitively expensive to get that took a while to save up for or you tried to get used? πŸ₯ΎπŸŽΏπŸ§₯🧦πŸͺ“
