Nua-#CelticSoulJourney at the Sidh of Beann Éadair (= Howth head), #Ireland: Aideen or Étain Fholtfhinn was a beautiful princess of the Sídh, a famous runner who was also the lover and later the wife of Oscar, grandson of #Fionn. When Oscar was killed in battle, Aideen died from grief at his loss. Her home had been the sídh of Beann Éadair, and this was where she was taken to be buried (= a portal tomb in the grounds of Howth Castle). Other traditions state that this was the tomb of Crimthan, a king of 1st century AD, and others still that the tomb is that of Étar himself

„#Fionn mac Cumhail had two magical hounds that he loved above all others, and it is said that he kept up to 200 of them. Bran and Sceolán were the unborn children of his aunt, Tuirean. She was abducted by a woman of the Sidhe and transformed into a hound whilst pregnant. She gave birth to two pups, which were then sent to Fionn as gifts.
Fionn, Bran and Sceolán were inseparable; they hunted and fought beside him, and appear in many stories together. They were certainly more companions to him than beasts, although the stories never mention if Fionn knew their true identity, or if they could communicate in any way other than any man does with his dog.“

`According to ancient Brehon law, ownership of #Irish Wolfhounds was governed by status. Only the nobility were permitted to own the hounds. The Fili, a classification of bard and poet, was limited to the possession of only two hounds, for example. Contrast this with the legendary hero of the Fianna, #Fionn mac Cumhaill, who famously loved the Irish Wolfhound. He was said to have owned in excess of five hundred!

`Words translated as “white” are often found in names and titles of #Celtic divinities. The word might be better translated as “shining” or “radiant,” for it refers to a quality of light rather than the absence of colour. Many deities and heroic figures bear names that suggest they were seen as emanating brilliant light: #Bóand (or Bó Find), the #Irish cow goddess, whose brightness may be the light reflecting off her river, the Boyne; #Fintan the salmon, who swam in the sacred well and whose flesh carried all the world’s wisdom; and the brilliant hero #Fionn Mac Cumhaill.`

#MythologyMonday: „When the shinbones of #Fionn Mac Cumhaill‘s mother were thrown into Lough Derg, they immediately came alive as #Caoranach. The serpent swam instantly to shore and swallowed Conan, but Fionn`s son fought his way out from her belly, killing the serpent in the process. When the hero emerged, he was both skinless and hairless, thus earning the name Conan Muil, “bald Conan.” The blood of the dying serpent stained the lake red, hence its name (“Dark Lake”).“

These delicate spring-blossoming wild flowers have their place in Irish #mythology: On her wedding night to #Fionn mac Cumhaill, #Grainne was said to have mixed bluebell with tormentil and secreted it into the wedding guests’ wine, thus sending them all to sleep so she could elope with her beloved Diarmuid.`

#Celtic #FolkloreThursday: „Bran and Sceolán were twin hounds belonging to #Irish mythological hero, #Fionn mac Cumhaill. Unbeknown to Fionn, these two faithful companions were actually the offspring of his aunt, Tuireann. She had been kidnapped and transformed into a wolfhound by Uchtdealb, a woman of the Sidhe who was jealous of Iollan‘s love for her.
Uchtdealb gave the hound Tuireann, who was already pregnant by this time, to a chieftain who was notorious for his dislike of dogs. She hunted well for him and gained his admiration, and when her time came, she gave birth to twin pups.
Tuireann was eventually restored to her human form, but the pups, who had not been born human, were forced to live out their lives as hounds. The chieftain gave them to Fionn. Their human-like intelligence coupled with their animal instinct and prowess soon led them to became great hunters and fighters, and they were renowned and admired the length and breadth of the land.“

#MythologyMonday: #Milucra bewitched a lake near the summit of #SlieveGullion and tricked #Fionn Mac Cumhaill into swimming in it. He emerged silver-haired, aged and bent. The #Fianna, captured the #fairy and forced her to give their leader a restorative potion from her golden Cornucopia, but in doing so she made sure his hair remained silver. Some texts say it was the #Irish hero Cuilenn who came to Fionn’s rescue by offering him a drink from a golden cup, which also endowed the hero with wisdom.

`The beautiful maiden #Sadb, daughter of the great magician Bobd Derg, was turned into a deer by one of his magical enemies, Fear Doirche. #Fionn Mac Cumhaill fell in love with a mysterious woman who visited him at night after he had saved a fawn from being killed by his hunting dogs. After many nights of pleasure, the dark sorcerer—her father’s enemy— found that Sadb had managed to slip out of her deer form and enjoy the hero’s affections. He cast a darker spell upon her so that she could never regain her womanly form.
Heartbroken, Sadb fled from her lover, who searched #Ireland for nearly a year. Then, near the great flat peak of Ben Bulben, he found a deer nursing a human infant. Recognizing his lover and their son, Fionn took the boy from her tenderly, naming him Oisín (“little fawn”).`

#Fionn Mac Cumhaill and the Fianna came upon the mouth of the #CavesOfKesh, before which sat three hags of evil and revolting aspect. Drewing near they found themselves suddenly entangled in strands of the yarn which the hags had spun about the place like the web of a spider, and deadly faintness and trembling came over them, so that they were easily bound fast by the hags and carried into the dark recesses of the cave.
