Zarpó en la Expedición de Guayana desde Cumaná. Estuvo preso en las Bóvedas de La Guaira. En 1814 recibió la Orden Libertadores de Venezuela. Contrajo nupcias con Luisa Cáceres, prisionera de las fuerzas realistas como manera de obligarlo a un canje de prisioneros, ante lo cual expresó: “Diga al jefe español que sin patria no quiero esposa”. Fué Comandante General de las Fuerzas de Mar y Tierra de Margarita en 1815. Ocupó cargos políticos y llegó al grado de G/J
