The man had been suffering from a sleeping sickness, and unfortunately had been prematurely buried.

Folklore states you can still hear the man banging and screaming In the Churchyard at night. ๐ŸŒ™

The Devil bloody loves Shropshire. Indeed, one Christmas he decided to spend it in Jackfield. You can read my retelling of that occasion below!

The Stiperstones is a dangerous place, particularly on the 21st of December, for this is when the Devil is most present.
He sits like the king of the hills, and calls forth all the countiesโ€™ followers, witches, warlocks, and cruel spirits, to judge their misdeeds, as they partake in the most important black mass of the year. During this, they elect the king or queen of evil for the following year.

Once, these furnaces raged with the fires of industry- as red as the gates of Hell.

Yet as years passed, the fires died.

My grandmother made them her playground, caves and castles in her mind. She wandered and danced, embracing their freedom.

Her ghost lives on here, shes still skipping her way between workers, singing as she goes. ๐Ÿ’š

It's customary to 'Tell The Bees' of a death in Shropshire.

In 1961 the Bee's of Sam Rogers from Myddle (totalling 14 hives) were told of his death as custom dictates. Having heard of his passing, they turned up at his service and settled on the flowers at his grave ๐Ÿ’š

This is the grave of Shropshire's last Sin Eater- Richard Munslow. I'm fascinated by the Sin Eater's place in folklore - a person who exists outside of the boundaries of the community, yet necessary for its spiritual safety. You can read about shropshires last Sin Eater by following the link below
