@geekgonecrazy @dachary @forgefriends absolutely; #ForgeFederation is a high priority, and everyone who was working on federation for Gitea is now involved in Forgejo so federation is likely to be implemented first in #Forgejo and then later upstreamed to #Gitea. So this has been brewing at the back of my mind for about a month now, and I awoke with sudden clarity this morning. I am planning to build a #CI, done some experiments, validated a few of my ideas - it's going slow, but eventually I'll get there.

One of the things I was pondering about is if it makes sense to bring the CI to the #Fediverse? And if so, how? How would the CI, and the fedi itself benefit?

So hear me out! What if...

What if the CI posted jobs on the Fedi via #ActivityPub? What if runners could follow the job posting account? What if the results could be posted back as replies? What if normal accounts could reply as well, and they'd basically comment on the job posting, or the results?

Imagine this: the CI posts a job, a bunch of followers build it, and respond with any number of result activities. The CI can then display those results itself, or forward it back to any forges it is connected to - or better yet, the forges might be following the CI's job account too, and may simply consider result activities by mutuals as official? And the rest, by random followers, as informal?

With a setup like this, if I wanted to contribute build power to a project, I'd just follow their job account from my runner, and voila! It'd still be informal, so builds wouldn't be considered failed if my runner fails, not unless their CI follows my runner back.

Status visibilities would still apply. The job account could mention specific runners too. A job account could boost jobs from another job account, to have its followers build those jobs too.

A job account could be posting all kinds of jobs, it wouldn't be tied to any repo at a protocol level - just by convention. A single repo, or project might even use multiple job posters: one for frontend parts that can be built anywhere, one for backend parts that need to be built on multiple platforms, and a third that just posts both. There are so many ways things could be set up!

I think this could be wonderful, and would go along well with #ForgeFederation.

The coordination app is the first of many that's based on the http://valueflo.ws vocabulary for economic cooperation. We're also planning to interoperate with the various #ForgeFederation projects for using it as an issue tracker for FOSS projects.

I have set up daily docker builds of @ta180m's federated #Gitea, mostly to make it easier for myself to update, but it might be useful for others aswell.

Source (a single .drone.yml) is on my own gitea, build logs are also available, and the daily-built containers are on my test instance.

docker pull the.mad-scientist.club/federation/gitea:latest, and you're good to go!
