Following up from a conversation about how some CS grads are surprised to find old tech in their new jobs - and don't know how to work with it…

@astronomerritt I used to enjoy the staring at the terminal way more. Couldn’t write a line of #Fortran77 these days mind. If I’d have worked harder though I’d be a radio astronomer and not a network engineer :)

Just told to "grow up" and stop using #Fortran77 in #ClimateModels (actually I don't, ours are written in #FORTRAN90) but it has me wondering if there are any #weather + #climate models that don't use #FORTRAN as the core code apart from #UKESM?

@jared @au_hasard Yeah, I know. Afaik the modern versions like #Fortran95 or later have even parallel computing with OpenMP. I was taught #Fortran77 in 2000 as part of studies at a physics school, but then shifted towards #cpython etc. Besides researchers that use it in science and engineering even today, it'll never die as it's libraries are behind modern libs like #NumPy and packages like #Matlab :).

Done – all computer codes of my papers are published, last the #FORTRAN77 code of a paper on modeling #bioturbation in the deep sea, written in fall 1992, just before I switched to #MATLAB, and published in 1998. #reproducibility

It is nice tradition to introduce yourself on #Mastodon. I am a geoscientist, studied #music, #geophysics, and #geology, and have a doctoral degree in #paleoceanography. My research is on the influence of climate in #Africa on human evolution using time series analysis methods. I learned #Fortran77 in the 1980s, have been using #MATLAB since 1992, and recently #Python - and have written several textbooks on data analysis in the earth sciences.
