The #EU's aspiration to wean itself off #fossilfuels from #Russia is not going so well... imports of #LNG have actually risen not fallen.

That said, while most EU countries have managed to reduce imports of Russian LNG, its Spain & Belgium who account for the actual increase, with their expansion outpacing the reductions by other countries.

If you wanted to reduce dependence on Russian supplies & also reduce funds flowing to the war machine, this looks like a major policy failure by the EU!

The #energycrisis merely emphasised the point that despite commitments to #netzero & the reduction of dependence on #fossilfuels, developed countries are still pouring subsidies into the fossil fuel sector.... recent 'help' for consumers was merely a cleverly badged subsidy to #energy firms.

Perhaps (?) we should be less hard on #RishiSunak for stepping from #green policies, as he's just explicitly doing what other Govt's are also effectively doing, but with pious words

err... not quite sure how you read that into my post.... I think what I'm looking for is a shift in the regulation of #fossilfuels, a change in the form(s) of #agriculture & a major constraint on the activities of the wealthy that disproportionately contribute to the #climatecrisis - robust & enforced regulation is the key not a monetarist expansion in the form of QE - we've seen what that does, thanks

The current #UK government recently won a by-election (an election called outside of the normal routine due to Boris Johnson resigning), by campaigning against introduction of a #ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone)
They have long been supported by and support #FossilFuels companies & #Pollution

We only have partial #democracy in the UK, as we don't have #PR so it's easier for the Tories to command a majority.

The House is burning down the house. And they think they are better?? This is their #WhiteSupremacy ... so sick and we're so lost.

A key attribute of #capitalism is its aggressive (unsustainable) exploitation of resources; perhaps best seen in the #fossilfuels sector, but evident across the global economy...

So perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that (as a new report from the TUC suggests) a similar approach to #workers is also evident.

Through the use of new #technology, #surveillance & domineering #management, work is getting ever more intensive with workers at increased danger of 'burning out'!

Canada has become the first G20 country to release a framework for phasing out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies.

Looks like environmentalists are calling it an important step but say it doesn't go far enough, especially with its support of unproven carbon capture and storage technologies.

Here's hoping this is just the first of many dominoes to fall... 🤞🤞

I see #GrantShapps is framing his desire to allow maximum extraction of #fossilfuels as a question of #energysecurity!

Now, wouldn't it have been refreshing, if citing #energy security, he had announced a massive programme of #renewableenergy & energy storage investments to drive a fast improvement in existing technologies....

but no, his chums in #BigOil would not like that at all.... whatever BP claim about being 'beyond petroleum' (they aren't!)

To confirm #COP28 has been captured by the #fossilfuels industry, the 'action plan' (so called) just issued allows fossil fuel use to continue while promoting use of #carboncapture & 'green hydrogen' (neither of which has been demonstrated to work when scaled up to the usage levels required for the plan to work) to balance it effects.

Its just yet more wishful thinking on the #ClimateCrisis while the world burns;

any politician 'welcoming' this plan is fatally compromised (hello Alok Sharma)

From an earlier post; air travel #emissions (per person) are much higher than travel by car.... but, to put that into perspective, here's a breakdown of #oil use:-

Transportation:
Road 44.6%
Aviation 5.6%
Marine 4.1%
Rail/Waterways 2%

Industry:
Petrochemicals 14.2%
Other products 13.2%

Power:
Electricity generation 5.1%

Other uses 11.4%

Not flying reduces #fossilfuels use bur we must also reduce our reliance road transport use!
