On 's birthday, a post about who chose Cicero’s "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (“On the ends of good and evil”) to hold in the famous portrait by Allan Ramsey (painted late in his life, see below), suggesting some regard for the author.

His son, , said of him: "He was the friend and associate of good, I may say, great men; of Abernethy, of Bruce, of Duchal, and of Hucheson; and his character of mild and tender benevolence is still remembered by many in the North of Ireland, and by not a few in this city."
