@liroyleshed My last brick-and-mortar job in corporate was in 2007. Then I went #freelance because infant daycare costs for my late-in-life singleton were beyond ludicrous. Haven’t looked back since: I #AmEditing from the comfort of my home office and still serve as summer mom chauffeur service for my now-16yo (who has a driving permit but not a license cuz #NewJersey).

No office politics. No hour(s)-long commute. Win-win. #freelancing #editing

PSA if you are freelance web developer to always use email to record critical milestones and agreements about the project because looking for stuff later in Slack is a nightmare.

Always write specific emails about estimates, start times, and due dates for accountability, in case someone else messes up things for you.

Any time there is a potential blocker or problem, email about it clearly.

I like this client I am currently working with for a book editing project. It's already our second collaboration. My only complaint is that they have a habit of messaging me at 11 p.m., which is way beyond my available hours that I've clearly indicated in our contract.

On the bright side, I also have a habit of not responding to their messages at that ungodly hour. Win!

God damn I'm having trouble getting paid for some #freelance work I've done

The invoice is so overdue I am planning to reissue it next week with a late fee (the original invoice clearly stated I would do this)

My question is, they've issued me a PO number for each invoice

So do I just reissue the same invoice with the same PO number, or issue a new invoice just for the late fees?

Was offered a project whose fee per article is half my base rate. The client informed me they can't increase the fee anymore because their client is a friend of the management, hence the "friendly" rate.

I don't feel bad for this lost opportunity. To begin with, I'm not a friend of client's client. Second, I know my worth (and the worth of basic commodities these days).

Also, friends shouldn't shortchange each other.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for free time tracking apps for freelancers? I don't need anything complex, just a basic system to track a handful of project hours that's better than a basic spreadsheet where I have to add dates and tallying formulas manually.

@emilyk Same. I'm also more active on LinkedIn now for #freelancing anyway (and a bit here in that respect). So it all works.

From a purely "business of #TTRPG #freelancing" perspective, the alleged new #WotC #OGL, if implemented, will almost certainly have a depressive effect. Anything that raises developmental overhead (like, for instance, transitioning to an entirely new rules-mechanical infrastructure for some or all of a publisher's games) can only put pressure on everything else.
