A typical North Mengen "cooking house" (vail ta) in Pomio, . Each household has one and it is where the married couple and uninitiated children live. The women in the photo are heating stones of an earth oven (svoin) and preparing taro to be roasted in it.

Food cooked in the earth oven is presented especially during ceremonial gift exchanges.

So, since I need a break from marking coursework, and I just saw a from Antarctica, here's one from up north. The icebreaker Polarstern on the day it first moored to its ice floe at the start of the year-long field campaign, on Oct 5 2019.

Because I haven't had the time/energy to be very active online lately, so today I will combine with some bird photography. On research vessels, we are frequently visited by birds loooking for a resting spot or possibly mistaking us for fishing vessels. I love these opportunities to observe birds on the open sea especially when the conditions are as beautiful as on this calm day with the fulmars on the Skagerak.

part 6: A woman preparing her yam garden for planting.

The Mengen in Pomio plant two kinds of yam, the greater yam (Dioscorea alata, Mengen: klaip, Tok Pisin: yam) and the lesser yam (Dioscorea esculenta, M: mis, TP: mami ).

After burning, women meticulously clean the plots from all debris before planting the yam in mounds.

A helicopter delivering field equipment to the top of . It was the first (and so far only) project I've been on that used helicopters. If I recall correctly we installed gas monitors, did photography and gas sampling from a drone, and installed a seismometer, a gps station, and a gravimeter.

Time for another from from June 2021.

In the field, everyone lends a hand: Here we are hauling up the mooring that my colleague leaves out every year to measure ocean temperature, salinity etc through the winter using as a platform.
The red buoy marks the position, the water here is 3-500m deep so pulling it up from the bottom takes some time + muscle power.

part 5:

A men's house (ging) in a North Mengen village in East Pomio. Men's houses are in the center of villages with houses lining them on either side.

Villages have typically several men's houses established by neighboring households. The fronts of the men's houses serve as public and ceremonial spaces. Initiated boys and unmarried or widowed men live in them.

, part 4

Nursery of a communal planting project in East Pomio, .

Cocoa fetches a relatively good price for smallholders, who have to transport the crop to buying points. The cocoa project was locally initiated as a source of income compatible with swidden horticulture and that does not require alienation of land.

Friday means time for (or if you prefer )

These were some of the first I ever saw on this spring. Made me realise there was more going on in that part of the than I'd imagined and I should pay it more attention!

Astonishingly beautiful and fragile, they grow on by evaporation+ condensation. Fascinating and surprisingly tasting!

Palm oil is pumped onto a tanker in the East Pomio (East New Britain), . The tug boat next to the ship help with pulling the palm oil hose connecting the pipeline coming from the mill to the ship.

In the background coconut plantings and garden lands of the village community next to the plantation.

I meant to post more this week but all of a sudden it's Friday again already... time for some fieldwork photos. This time less clean work with a lot of mud coming from over 6000m water depth of the North Atlantic. During expedition MSM96, I measured profiles of dissolved oxygen concentrations in cores from the surface sediment. The more organic material settles from the surface, the more oxygen gets consumed in the sediment.
