A poem to the great goddess Frigg, who sees the fate of us all.

Oh Frigg
Foremost among goddesses
Did you know?

Your shining son dreamt
Of baleful dreams,
His light snuffed out.

Oh Frigg
Beloved of Spear Shaker
Did you know?

On Sleipnir, Óðinn rode
To the eastern door
Awakened the Völva.

Oh Frigg
Great Weaver
Did you know?

Vegtam played tricks
On the seeress
Her dark prophecy told.

Oh Frigg
Determined Mother
Did you know?

You beseeched
Nearly all spirits,
To save your precious Baldur.

Oh Frigg
Prepared for everything
Did you know?

The gods rejoiced in sport,
Throwing even the mighty Mjölnir
Nothing could harm your beautiful son.

Oh Frigg
Sorrowful Hlín
Did you know?

Blind Höd heard
Loki’s whispers,
Overlooked mistletoe darkened the Nine Realms.

Oh Frigg
Seeress of All of our Fates
Did you know?
You never could have saved him.

I've been Heathen for almost 30 years and have long considered them to be separate. A lot of that is just experiential - they feel and communicate differently when I've interacted with them.

When it comes to the stories about them - especially in the Norse sources - I find it difficult in many cases to substitute one for the other. Just for a couple examples, I can't imagine Frigg sleeping with four dwarves to gain Brisingamen, nor can I see Freya asking all things to spare Baldur's life. And I expect the reaction of the Gods would have been very different if Jotuns had been demanding Frigg's hand in marriage - Odin's own wife! - instead of Freya's.

Of course, none of that constitutes any kind of proof, and UPG is only as good as its source 😀.

Hello again!

I think I've already gotten a response from Frigg on the Allmother kerning 😀

I mentioned I'd found a devotional for Frigg. It's called "Circle of Frith" by Rev. Marie Durkan and is published by the Troth, one of the largest Heathen organizations in the US. While they're not primarily reconstructionists, their stuff typically has a good foundation in the lore but allows plenty of room for the kind of growth we were talking about.

At any rate, I hadn't started reading the devotional book when we spoke last, and when I did, one of the first things I noticed is that Rev. Durkan, a priestess of Frigg, uses the All-mother kerning a *lot*. It's one of the first bynames she uses and in her section on kernings, its the first I've she discusses. In one place she even notes:

"Just as Odin is the All-Father, Frigg is the All-Mother. In Egil’s Saga, the poet Egill Skallagrimsson refers to the gods collectively as “Frigg’s progeny” (Smiley 2005)."

So, if I was looking for an idea of Frigg's thoughts on the matter, I think I've got my answer. 😆

Oh, no, Freya's not in the movies, I'm talking about the comic books, where whether Odin is married to Freya or Frigga depends on who the currentt writer is. It was also the comic books where I first saw both being referred to as the Allmother quite a while before I started seeing it pop up from time to time in the Heathen community.

I haven't read much of Jackson Crawford's .work. I've heard a lot of good things about him - it's kind of a shame to hear he's promoting the idea that they're the same goddess. I know I've reached out to both Frigg and Freya and gotten distinctly different responses from them!

@wihtlore Sure, thanks for responding!

I try to be pretty flexible, too, because if this is a living faith, then it has to be able to grow. We need stories of new experiences and to allow our gods to change if they so desire.

I think my main hesitation over the "Allmother" title is that as far as I can tell, it originated with Marvel, who aren't all that great at getting the established lore correct. To the best of my knowledge, it's completely ahistorical, but at the same time, what's to say Frigg hasn't grown in her role and stepped up to be equal with her husband? I'm curious to see where it goes :)

I lIke your drawings!

Modern Heathens celebrate Mother's Night, usually on the 20th - the eve of the Solstice. It's a celebration of both our physical mothers and the Mother Goddesses, in particular, Frigg in her role as the primary Mother Goddess.

(A side note to that: In recent years, I've actually heard some Heathens who've apparently been lnspired by Marvel's comic book portrayal of Frigg/Freya [who they often conflate 🙄] as the All-Mother. No idea what I think about that!)

It's also a time to reflect on the work of the year. That stems from the theory that on Mother's Night for the old Norse, women were to have completed all of their spinning and weaving for the year, and the holiday was also the start of a break in their usual Fibre work until the new year started.

THANK FRIGG IT'S FRIDAY

Yes, fellow tooters, it's frigging Friday! 🥳

I'm saying that because the origin of "Friday" lies in the Old English "Frīgedæg"

➡️ Day of Frigga

Named after the Germanic goddess Frigg, wife of the supreme god Odin and the
goddess of married love

And according to historians...

Frigg couldn't WAIT for Fridays..! 😉
