"The press have repeated a statement initially peddled by #TEPCO, that this contaminated water only includes #tritium. This is untrue, and tritium is not without its own risks. The water being discussed has been through the various filtration systems on site used to remove #radioactive #isotopes. Each system removes some of the radioactive elements in the water. ALPS is the last of these systems. It can remove much of the remaining contamination but not all of it, some radioactive contamination remains in this water.
"We [SimplyInfo] documented back in 2018 that this water contains other problematic radioactive elements including:
#Plutonium (238, 239, 240)
#Americium
Iodine 129
#Technetium 99
Cobalt 60
Curium 244
Niobium-94
#Europium (152, 154)
#Cesium 137
#Strontium 90
Selenium 79
Nickel 63
Tin 126 (aka: Sn-126)
"As of 2018 the stored post ALPS water contained 200 billion becquerels of iodine 129, #ruthenium 106, and technetium 99. As stored water increases, so does the total volume of contamination within that water.
"TEPCO and the Japanese government have tried to ease concerns by claiming the water will be diluted before it is dumped into the Pacific ocean. This is a meaningless step. The total amount of radioactive contamination is still dumped into the ocean, you just dumped some additional water beside it at the same time."

Hacker group attacks #Japan #nuclear websites over #Fukushima water release plan
August 18, 2023
"International hacker group #Anonymous has launched cyberattacks against nuclear power-linked groups in Japan in protest at the planned release of treated radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea, a Japanese IT security firm said.
"Anonymous has been intensifying its cyber offensives since last month, shortly after the #IAEA said in its final report that the planned discharge would comply with global safety standards, NTT Security Japan said.
"'Vigilance is needed, as the attacks could further escalate after the discharge,' a representative of the Tokyo-based firm said.
"The organizations targeted by the international hacktivist group are the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, Japan Atomic Power Co and the Atomic Energy Society of Japan.
"Anonymous have carried out distributed denial-of-service, or #DDoS attacks, in which networks are overwhelmed by hackers who unleash a flood of data from multiple sources over a short period, with the assault being led by a group based in Italy.
"Activities by a group based in Vietnam have also been confirmed, NTT Security said.
"The Japan Atomic Energy Agency said its website saw about 100 times more than its usual traffic, but users could continue browsing the site as it took countermeasures.
"According to NTT Security, Anonymous released a 'target list' of its attacks after the Japanese government formally decided in 2021 to release treated water from Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.'s #FukushimaDaiichi nuclear power plant.
"In addition to the three nuclear power-related organizations, TEPCO, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Liberal Democratic Party were on the list, NTT Security said.
"A member of Anonymous told Kyodo News recently that the Japanese government's policy to release treated water lacks transparency as citizens were not able to participate in its decision-making process.
"'We must put an end to the senseless act of making the #sea a #dumping ground for economic benefit,' the member said.
"Massive amounts of #contaminated water have been generated in the process of cooling melted reactor fuel after the Fukushima plant was devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
"The water has been kept in tanks after going through the advanced liquid processing system that removes most radionuclides except tritium [AND 62 OTHER RADIONUCLIDES], but the storage vessels are nearing capacity. Tritium is known to be less harmful than other radioactive materials, such as cesium and strontium.
"Local fishermen and some neighboring countries remain opposed to the plan, with China introducing blanket radiation testing on Japanese seafood."

New #Fukushima #nuclear #wastewater leak heightens international concerns
August 18, 2023
"The latest reported leak of nuclear-contaminated water from the #FukushimaDaiichi nuclear power plant has again heightened international concerns over the competence of Tokyo Electric Power Company (#TEPCO) and the lack of effective regulation from the Japanese government, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Thursday.
"Spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a press briefing when asked to comment on media reports that TEPCO recently confirmed a leak of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant as a result of a crack in the hose used to transport the wastewater.
"The legitimacy and safety of #Japan's ocean discharge plan have long been questioned by the international community, and people in Fukushima have pointed out many times that since the nuclear plant accident, TEPCO's handling of the aftermath has been highly problematic, Wang said.
"People are questioning TEPCO's ability to properly handle the nuclear-contaminated water, Wang added.
"'Can TEPCO handle the wastewater in a safe and responsible way throughout the process? Can it manage the 30-year-long discharge without mistakes and errors? Can it ensure the long-term effectiveness and reliability of the treatment facility? Can it conduct wastewater sampling and monitoring activities in strict compliance with the rules? The international community is very doubtful about that,' Wang said.
"Wang reiterated that the Japanese side should take seriously the legitimate concerns of the international community and the people in Japan, stop pushing through the ocean discharge plan, have full and sincere communication with neighboring countries, dispose of the nuclear-contaminated water in a truly responsible way, and accept rigorous international oversight."

Leaks found in hose to transfer #Fukushima #nuclear-contaminated #wastewater
Editor: huaxia, 2023-08-11
"The operator of the crippled #FukushimaDaiichi nuclear power plant has found leaks in a hose used to transfer nuclear-contaminated wastewater, local media reported on Friday.
"Tokyo Electric Power Company (#TEPCO) conducted a probe after higher-than-usual levels of #radioactive material were detected in #rainwater in the dike around a storage tank, public broadcaster NHK reported.
"An inspection found that some water had leaked from cracks of about four centimeters on a hose being used for transferring radioactive wastewater at the time, the report said.
"As the hose was used to transfer radioactive wastewater from another tank, TEPCO analyzed water in the dike around the tank and detected up to 67,000 becquerels of tritium per liter, which exceeded 60,000 becquerels, the standard set by the Japanese government for releasing tritium into the environment.
"TEPCO said that someone caused the cracks with a cutter blade while removing the packaging around the hose after it was delivered, adding that the water that leaked remained inside the barrier.
"TEPCO added that the leak would not affect the plan to discharge the radioactive wastewater from the plant into the ocean.
"Despite strong opposition from neighboring and #PacificIsland countries, as well as local fishermen over the irreversible impacts on the marine environment and public health, the Japanese government and TEPCO have been pushing for release of the radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant hit by a massive earthquake and an ensuing tsunami in March 2011."

#Japan’s lack of transparency on #Fukushima water is sparking fear in neighbors, says Japanese expert
Naoya Sekiya said the Japanese government has been more concerned with international organizations than with persuading neighboring countries
By Kim So-youn, Tokyo correspondent, July 24, 2023
"The reason #SouthKorea, #China, and other countries are concerned about the safety of Japan’s imminent release of contaminated water currently being stored at the #FukushimaDaiichi #nuclear plant into the ocean is the result of Tokyo’s failure to provide adequate information, an expert claimed in a recent interview.
"Naoya Sekiya, an associate professor at the University of Tokyo, said in an interview published Friday by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper that the 'anxieties of people in South Korea, China, and other neighboring countries have not been resolved' in connection with the water’s release.
"He also said a 'big factor in this issue' was 'the Japanese government not providing adequate information.'"

#GreenParty Statement on #Fukushima
August 3, 2023
"The Green Party of the United States (#GPUS) and the Green Party of Hawai’i stand in solidarity with our fellow #Greens in #Japan and #SouthKorea when calling for the end of the near-shore release of 1.33 million tons of contaminated water from the #FukushimaDaiichi #nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean. The Green Party of the United States and the Green Party of Hawai’i urges the Government of #Japan to respect existing international treaties that ban the releasing of nuclear waste into the oceans. We also join the Green Party Korea and the Greens Japan in calling for the cancellation of ocean releasing plans. For this, we call for a public review of methods of on-land storage such as 'large tank storage' and 'mortar solidification treatment'.
"Up to this point, independent review has not been allowed. We demand a public, independent review and the citizens of the Asia-Pacific have a right to know about the safety of such release.
"Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has long concerned themselves with #profit. TEPCO is one of many #corporations that internalizes profits and externalizes their losses. We call shame upon TEPCO for their unwillingness to listen to the general public in #EastAsia and take their concerns seriously.
"Kim Yeon-cheol, executive chairman of the National Federation of Fishermen's Associations in South Korea said, 'In South Korea, people who feel uneasy about releasing marine products into the sea are already refraining from consuming seafood. We should not catch and provide seafood until it has been verified that it is completely safe.'
"The majority of the public in South Korea and Japan does not trust the International Atomic Energy Association (#IAEA)’s report finding the release of #contaminated water safe. This report has not even completed sample analysis of contaminated water. We encourage the IAEA to build that trust network with the Nation Federation of Fishermen’s Associations of South Korea and the Fishermen’s Union of Fukushima Japan and listen to their concerns about livelihood.
"The Green Party of the United States urges TEPCO and IAEA to gain the trust of the public. Currently, TEPCO and IAEA’s incentives lie in keeping profits and protecting the leadership of the right-wing, nationalist Japanese government instead of the concerns of the average Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or Taiwanese citizen. Let’s create an East Asia and a world where the average person can live free of the worry about food safety."

#Fukushima #Nuclear #ContaminatedWater Discharge Sparks Global Outcry Amid E#nvironmental Concerns
Japanese Government's Controversial Move to Discharge #Radioactive Water Triggers Intense Backlash
9 July 2023
"The public’s disapproval of the release of Fukushima’s nuclear polluted water into the sea has been fervent. Their objection is not directed at the normal functioning of nuclear power plants but rather stems from #Japan’s dissemination of misleading information under the guise of 'pseudoscience.' It is vital to elucidate the fundamental distinction between Fukushima’s nuclear-contaminated water and the regular operations of a nuclear power plant from a scientific perspective. By analyzing their sources, the Fukushima nuclear disaster stands as the most severe nuclear accident, resulting in water contaminated with an extensive array of radionuclides generated by nuclear fission. In contrast, nuclear waste water from power plants worldwide is primarily composed of various types of process water, chemical water, ground water, shower and laundry water, all classified as general operational water. Each source manifests unique characteristics in terms of radionuclide composition.
"It is crucial to highlight that the Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water contains over 60 types of radionuclides, some of which are significantly more hazardous than tritium, a substance the Japanese authorities claim they can efficiently purify and treat. Alarming concerns arise as many of these #radionuclides lack effective treatment methods. Japan’s own data reveals that approximately 70 percent of nuclear-contaminated water processed through the Multi-Nuclide Treatment System (#ALPS) fails to meet discharge standards, necessitating re-purification. Additionally, the assessment report published by the #IAEA acknowledges that ALPS 'may not remove all radionuclides in nuclear-contaminated water.' Furthermore, the long-term implications of this decision cannot be ignored, as it may take up to 30 years for Japan to execute the discharge plan, potentially resulting in an irreversible environmental catastrophe.
"'The radioactive materials stemming from the nuclear accident should not be released, and we must preserve a pristine ocean for our generation and those to come,' passionately stated Masashi Tani, a representative of Japanese civic groups. On the 7th of July, various civil organizations in Fukushima Prefecture and beyond made a resounding statement, revealing that over 250,000 individuals had signed petitions opposing the release of nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean. The gravity of this global outcry underscores the urgent need for a reconsideration of Japan’s decision.
"As the international community scrutinizes Japan’s stance on the matter, the ramifications of releasing nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean extend beyond national borders. Concerns about potential health hazards, ecological damage, and the perpetuation of long-term radioactive pollution are driving this global controversy. It is imperative for authorities to heed the mounting public outcry and prioritize the protection of our planet’s fragile ecosystems."

#Radiation is good for you? The fringe viewpoint gains ground in the Trump administration
by Patrick Malone February 27, 2019
"These assertions [of #Radiation #Hormesis"] stand scientific consensus on its head. Most experts say to the contrary that even low doses of radiation cause cell damage that years later can promote uncontrolled cell growth and replication, and that children and fetuses are particularly susceptible to harm. That seven-decade-old view was reaffirmed as recently as last April [2018] in a study by a congressionally chartered nonprofit organization, the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement.
"The study, overseen by a dozen experts from the government, academia, and industry, and funded by the NRC, considered 29 contemporary scientific studies of the effects of low-dose radiation in reaffirming that even low-level radiation should be avoided to the extent possible.
"'There is clear evidence of excess risks for many cancer types, such as bladder, breast, colon, stomach and lung,' from exposure to excess radiation, the report said. It acknowledged that at lower doses the relationship is less certain, but noted that several long studies of medical outcomes for tuberculosis patients given x-ray imaging known as fluoroscopy collectively showed “a straight-line relationship between breast tissue [radiation] dose and breast cancer, adding substantial weight to the judgment on the use of the [existing] model for radiation protection.'
"It added that 'there was no conclusive evidence' to refute the linear, or direct cause and effect, 'relationship for many of the risks attributable to low-level ionizing radiation' – essentially endorsing the mainstream insistence on low-dose protections as a prudent, cautionary measure. The NRC members will consider the report as they deliberate about the SARI members’ petition, McIntyre said."
