If you are interested in mutualism and warming, this is a plug for collaborative project led by Austin Cruz along with G. Davidowitz & J. Bronstein, synthesizing thermal physiology and the biology of mutualisms in "Mutualisms in a warming world":

Excellent review of satellite remote sensing for mapping at regional and global scales.

This is crucial for and the prevention of of such as .

The EU and FAO need to read this, and other recent related work, and then realise they need to update their antiquated definition of "forest" based only on veg structure and ignoring .

This grabbed my attention.
nature.com/articles/s41597-022.

I recently compiled data on leaf area. I was keen to compare for species with bipinnate compound leaves that are common in African . For leaf area I used leaflet size from powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn.

I downloaded their data (doi.org/10.17871/TRY.81). The metadata says leaf area is "in case of compound leaves the area of a leaflet lamina". I checked Acacia nilotica. Theirs: 1691.79 mm^^. Mine: 4.2 mm^^.

As I said before, this is impressive work.

I have questions: Why are all plant species that do not have needle-leaves or scale-type leaves lumped together as broad-leaved? Why are species with simple leaves treated like species with pinnate or bipinnate compound leaves?

But why must the distribution of samples according to MAT vs MAP be over-laid with Whittaker's (1975) biomes?

It adds bias.

A little toot!

I'm Max, I just started a postdoc at SLU in Umeå, Sweden. I'm really interested in: , , , , , .

My PhD was on in species in Australian and Norwegian . Currently working on a global study, , to uncover nutrient cycling tipping points in mountain ecosystems.

Also I use they/them pronouns in english 🙂
