The global #biodiversity observing system (GBiOS) proposed by @geobon and partners (with our deputy director Tim Hirsch) would unite monitoring and guide action while leveraging countries' investments in existing national and global data infrastructures and networks like #OBIS and #GBIF:

I had a good experience with #GBIF. A record from the Natural History Museum in London had stag-horn fern, Platycerium bifurcatum, present in Wellington, NZ, in 1933, "very common on rocks and cliff faces.” This species is only now starting to naturalise from Auckland garden plants.
I submitted a note and within days the senior curator of ferns at NHM emailed saying they'd corrected the mistake—it was in Papua New Guinea—and updated the species ID.

@danieln Thanks. 😀 A pointer in the right direction could help. From what I've been able to figure out, #GBIF takes data from institutions and not individuals, so I'll need to partner with a NZ institution (eg the university where I work) and help them to set up a GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT). I then put my data on the cloud somewhere and pipe it through that IPT to GBIF.
Is that right?
I'm watching the progress on Humboldt Core with interest as my data is more structured than DwC.
@IceNine 😄 Only about 2% of my observations are on iNaturalist at the moment. Those are mostly the observations with photos that are on their own particularly important.
I'm thinking all my observations without photos will need to go up to #GBIF some other way. That's still a puzzle I need to solve.

Normally wouldn't link any tweet but Annals of Botany really did a nice thread on our last #oaks paper. Pure applied #consilience in science: NGS SNP #phylogeny, FBD dating using a score of #fossils, and chipping in some (cleaned) #GBIF distribution data for #biome and #climate zone mapping.

There's a new blog article on the #iNaturalist website with an overview of its contributions to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (#GBIF). That's the global warehouse for biodiversity data.
Here are some standouts:
- since 2020, most GBIF records for most species have come from iNaturalist.
- 42% of the species on GBIF had *all* of their observations since 2020 come from iNaturalist.
That's an extraordinary contribution for a citizen science platform.

A post by iNaturalist on some GBIF statistics. GBIF is still heavily biased towards birds from eBird, which is why I usually think of "Bird Site" as referring to eBird, not Twitter. 🙂
"Over time, iNaturalist has become an increasingly significant contributor to GBIF. In fact, since 2020, most GBIF records for most species have come from iNaturalist."
