#GCP is such a nightmare

add "Serverless VPC connector is in a bad state, manual deletion recommended" to the long list of errors in #GCP that I never used to have in #AWS

#AITA? #devops allowed #GCP to automatically add random digit strings to project names to make them unique. I complained because now the #datascience and #machinelearning team has to memorize and type out those digits whenever we do ad hoc queries, which is all the time. #devops does not actually use the #GBQ #database so didn’t realize how annoying this would be. Am I the asshole? I don’t think so 🤷 some people just don’t think about how their work impacts others

In short Montreal 🇨🇦 (northamerica-northeast1) is best with 100% carbon free energy.

If you want to stay in EU 🇪🇺 , Finland 🇫🇮 (europe-north1) is the way to go with 91% carbon free energy

For Paris the numbers are not available :(

#AWS has tons of #documentation but I've also found it too be far too surface level to actually be actionable. The amount of trial and error I've had to do while using them is pretty crazy. Ultimately i don't think they internally care about UX much. So much of their tooling is simultaneously great pieces of engineering AND absolutely opaque and painful. Has anyone else felt this? Is #GCP the same?

google's #gcp paas offerings:
- appengine standard runtime is a "classic" paas that runs your code in a lightweight sandbox
- appengine flexible runtime wraps your code in a docker container and runs it using compute engine
- cloud run can be configured to wrap your code in a docker container and run that without compute engine
- cloud functions gen 1 run your code in a lightweight sandbox
- cloud functions gen 2 wrap your code in a cloud run docker container

long shot, but, is there someone who's used both #gcp and #aws? if so, is aws any better than gcp? does it have similar issues with documentation and weird permissions you need to give to google-managed service accounts that no one's gonna tell you about? also does aws work better with terraform?
