@georgettetan KAAAN? Samelah. Editor will throw my work back at me and tell me to rewrite. But nowadays got so much opinion. I realise during the recent #GE15 media coverage was there there was so much of pontification. So many people trying to be Nostradamus and being god awful at it lol.
Why is the #House #Speaker vote a big story in #Asia? It had little to no impact on foreign policy, trade, or any relevant issues. Whereas regional events, like #China's Communist Party Congress, #Malaysia's recent #GE15, or upcoming elections in #Thailand #Indonesia & #Taiwan have far greater regional importance, but get little attention outside their own country.
Wish Asians (& Asian media) would pay more attention to their neighbors.

My thoughts on QT - it tempts people to talk AT other people. And ... it could help amplify disinformation/toxic content. One of the eye-opening things I learned from the #TikTok racist video saga this #GE15 was from @muniramustaffa . We think we're doing good by quoting these content and "speaking out" but what we're doing is just spreading the message. That was really revalatory for me.
PS: @Gargron thoughst about QTs: https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/99662106175542726

I am amazed that someone felt it was necessary to translate my most recent GNET article into Italian, and I'm so grateful that my work is being disseminated widely. I didn't anticipate such an overwhelmingly positive reaction and degree of interest.
My investigation was motivated by the desire to understand and identify the problem. While everyone was so preoccupied with blaming "extremism" for the GE15 outcome, I was disatisfied because I didn't think it truly explained the problem. The nature of the information ecosystem made it conducive for targeted influence campaigns. My concern rose when I realised that the contents of TikTok were the result of digital astroturfing, but no one made the effort to highlight the financial incentives of the influencer economy as a contributing factor to the problem.
I hope that the lessons learned and identified vulnerabilities from #GE15 will enable us to take the necessary precautions to mitigate these key risks and safeguard future elections.

I am pleased to share my latest, published by the Global Network on Extremism & Technology (GNET), in which I did a deep dive into Malaysia's recent general elections (#GE15). In this write up, I discussed a number of important themes, such as 1) cybertroopers, 2) conspiracy theories, and 3) right-wing extremism.
In this article, I highlighted how they overlap and interconnect in exacerbating existing social tensions in Malaysia, a country with a long and complicated history, to be weaponised for the self-interest and political ambitions of opportunistic political players.
I also described how the information ecosystem is plagued not only by domestic bad actors but also by foreign influence operators who aim to disrupt a nation's democratic processes. The emergence of the influencer economy on social media allows political interference. In the conclusion, I identified risks as well as critical policy applications and lessons to be learned in order to safeguard future elections.

Are we writing the news wrong? The avalanche of apocalyptic opinion pieces during the recent #GE15 election in #Malaysia have made me wonder if #journalists have forgotten that life isn't always a disaster, that there's hope.
A podcaster pointed me to The Christian Science Monitor whose news pieces always have a blurb "Why we Wrote this". Their tagline: "Beyond fear, beyond anger. Real news, real hope."
PS: I was a #journalist once upon a time.

@chris_mahan yes I totally am! Birdsite has become unbearable during our #GE15 and I wondered why I was still there lol
Enjoying a much-appreciated free Jazz concert at the River of Life, Kuala Lumpur. After the tense week we had, this felt like a great way to celebrate #GE15 and being #Malaysian
