Pathetic, really - "‘A critical moment’: warns world will miss targets unless phased out - Governments failing to cut fast enough to meet goals and avoid major report says
...
There is a “rapidly narrowing window” for governments to move faster, according to the report, as global greenhouse gas emissions must peak by 2025 at the latest, and be rapidly reduced from there, to limit temperature rises to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
...
Ani Dasgupta, the head of the World Resources Institute thinktank, noted that the bland tone of the report disguised a catastrophic failure. He said: “The UN’s polite prose glosses over what is a truly damning report card for global climate efforts.

“Carbon emissions? Still climbing. Rich countries’ finance commitments? Delinquent. Adaptation support? Lagging woefully behind. This report is a wake-up call to the injustice of the climate crisis, and a pivotal opportunity to correct course.”
...
Emissions are still rising, however, and there is a gap of 20 to 23 gigatonnes of between the cuts needed by 2030 to limit global temperatures to 1.5C and the world’s current emissions trajectory.

The report, which was expected next week but was published hurriedly in draft by the UN on Friday, will form the basis of the first “global stocktake” under the 2015 Paris agreement. That process is meant to track countries’ efforts to meet the goals of the treaty.

However, the 47-page UN report does not set out in detail which countries are falling behind, nor does it contain specific recommendations directed at particular countries or regions."

@ZLabe is not just a more potent than it is *far* more potent. Explained well in this article from
"Over 20 years, the methane would trap about 80 times as much heat as the CO2. Over 100 years, that original ton of methane would trap about 28 times as much heat as the ton of CO2.

Trancik says environmental organizations and climate models, including those used for major studies or international accords like the Paris Agreement, consider the warming effects of methane over a hundred years. Why this number, when methane is far more damaging in the short term? In part, Trancik says, it was an “accident of history.” Decades ago, when scientists began to tackle the complicated task of comparing different greenhouse gases, most climate projections were looking out to the year 2100—about 100 years in the future."

@farhanasultana wow, superbly written and great links too. Really well done. My favourite quote from your article is this - "For instance, many climate policies and solutions, such as carbon trading, offsetting or net zero, are based on the economic principles that have fueled climate change and socioeconomic inequalities in the first place — without actually reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In other words, these solutions fail to address the root causes of the climate crisis and inadequately tackle structural factors for rising greenhouse gas emissions. Indeed, many exacerbate social and economic inequalities on the ground for marginalized communities. Some have even led to violence and displacement of Indigenous groups.'

"Deadly global heatwaves undeniably result of climate crisis, scientists show" - "The human-caused climate crisis is undeniably to blame for the deadly heatwaves that have struck Europe and the US in recent weeks, scientists have shown.

Both would have been virtually impossible without the global heating driven by burning fossil fuels, their analysis found. Another searing heatwave, in China, was made 50 times more likely by the climate crisis.

The results make it crystal clear that human-caused global heating is already destroying lives and livelihoods across the world, making the need to cut emissions ever more urgent. Such brutal heatwaves are no longer rare, the scientists said, and will worsen as emissions continue to rise. If the world heats by 2C, they will happen every two to five years.

A report by leading climate scientists in March endorsed by the world’s governments, said: “There is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a livable and sustainable future for all.” The latest analysis demonstrated how rapidly that window is closing.

Earlier in July, temperature records were shattered in many places in southern Europe, the western US and Mexico and China, bringing heat-related deaths and wildfires. The first week of July saw the hottest global temperatures in history. The researchers found that greenhouse gas emissions made the heatwaves 2.5C hotter in Europe, 2C hotter in North America, and 1C hotter in China than if humankind had not changed the global atmosphere."

"Indicators of Global Climate Change 2022: annual update of large-scale indicators of the state of the climate system and human influence - Article in Earth System Science Data (ESSD), 08 June 2023
...
"The indicators show that human-induced warming reached 1.14 [0.9 to 1.4] ∘C averaged over the 2013–2022 decade and 1.26 [1.0 to 1.6] ∘C in 2022. Over the 2013–2022 period, human-induced warming has been increasing at an unprecedented rate of over 0.2 ∘C per decade. This high rate of warming is caused by a combination of greenhouse gas emissions being at an all-time high of 54 ± 5.3 GtCO2e over the last decade, as well as reductions in the strength of aerosol cooling. Despite this, there is evidence that increases in greenhouse gas emissions have slowed, and depending on societal choices, a continued series of these annual updates over the critical 2020s decade could track a change of direction for human influence on climate."

hmmm ... Rowan Atkinson makes several valid points here, but others that make no sense to me, such as "the environmental problem with a petrol engine is the petrol, not the engine ..." What?! (fyi, "Mr Bean" Atkinson holds bachelors and masters degrees in Electrical Engineering).

"I love electric vehicles – and was an early adopter. But increasingly I feel duped - Rowan Atkinson (Guardian)

"Global warming in the pipeline" - James Hansen, Makiko Sato, Leon Simons, Larissa S. Nazarenko et al. posted a revised draft of this paper on 19. May 2023. It is well worth a read.

Quoting from the Abstract -
"Improved knowledge of glacial-to-interglacial global temperature change implies that fast-feedback equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) is 1.2 ± 0.3°C (2σ) per W/m2. Consistent analysis of temperature over the full Cenozoic era – including “slow” feedbacks by ice sheets and trace
gases – supports this ECS and implies that CO2 was about 300 ppm in the Pliocene and 400 ppm
at transition to a nearly ice-free planet, thus exposing unrealistic lethargy of ice sheet models.
Equilibrium global warming including slow feedbacks for today’s human-made greenhouse gas (GHG) climate forcing (4.1 W/m2) is 10°C, reduced to 8°C by today’s aerosols. Decline of
aerosol emissions since 2010 should increase the 1970-2010 global warming rate of 0.18°C per
decade to a post-2010 rate of at least 0.27°C per decade. Under the current geopolitical approach
to GHG emissions, global warming will likely pierce the 1.5°C ceiling in the 2020s and 2°C
before 2050. Impacts on people and nature will accelerate as global warming pumps up
hydrologic extremes. The enormity of consequences demands a return to Holocene-level global
temperature."
