Some NPCs are mean, not everyone in a story is doing the right thing, or behaving properly, so some NPCs will be dicks

A cool tip for taking the sting out of nasty/mean NPC dialogue:

Even though the player "knows" it's not you, they may still "feel" like it's you saying these things.

What I do sometime is in-between the NPC talking I'll break off as a DM and say to the player "Urgh, this guy is a total dick!".

Really seems to help the player "feel" that it's just the NPC

If you're a GM, call your players. Ask them how it's going. Call your GM, ask *them*. You'll probably get a great conversation and insight into your table.
