My war is turning 20.

#GWOT so defined my life and that of my peers that, sometimes, it’s hard for me to understand people for whom it did not, even though I know I’m in a small minority. Reading Menand’s “The Metaphysical Club,” and finding out that there was entire class of people that abstained from the #CivilWar is dumbfounding, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.
One of the things that fascinates me the most about 2022 is how we have all forgotten that 19 years before the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine, we Americans were the bad guys and launched an invasion that killed over a million innocent civilians. No one talks about it anymore. #iraq #2003 #globalwaronterror #gwot #georgewbush #9/11

It's curious that given events in Iraq, the interview doesn't ask #Bush to reflect on the consequences of the #GWOT. The focus is of course on #9/11 and the global #counterterrorism war, and less on the parallel #counterinsurgency wars going on in Iraq and #Afghanistan. So Bush doesn't say much about events in Iraq. But his shallow and simplistic summary of the counterterrorism mission as just killing bad guys speaks volumes.
