The Galapagos archipelago is located 1000 km off the coast of Ecuador 🇪🇨

Charles Darwin landed on the islands in 1835. The diversity of species he found on the islands inspired his theory of evolution

Once upon a time, the research submarine observed (and photographed!) a colossal in the — reportedly it measured 4 meters (~13’) in length! If true, this would be the largest octopus ever*. Alas, we know little of the unpublished encounter and perhaps there was a mistake (e.g. the length could have been the arm-span)… I’m still holding on to a sliver of hope!

* may reach 3.5m and isn’t as compact.

As part of my Galapagos posts, I am sharing pictures of two of my favorites. Sally lightfoot crabs are everywhere, but they are so charming. This picture doesn’t do their color justice. The marine iguanas were equally fascinating. The only species of swimming iguanas, they spend much of their day in dogpiles, absorbing heat from the sun and sneezing salt, before diving back into the cold water to feed. Love them!

- Day 3. 'Fragment'
Most of Charles 's collections are in Cambridge, but also the has some material. Most, however, are just small pieces that we received via the herbarium collection of John Miers in 1879.
This one is a fragment of the type material of Cissampelos testudinum, which Miers described from the Islands. Miers kept some pieces for himself, while the actual holotype is in the Kew herbarium.
