"Gannett sues Google, Alphabet claiming they have a monopoly on digital advertising
Gannett is suing Google and its parent company Alphabet, claiming that they unlawfully acquired and maintain monopolies on the advertising technology tools that publishers and advertisers use to buy and sell online ad space"
This is rich coming from a shitty company like Gannett who ruined Television, and print media.
“Next quarter #Gannett will roll out a live pilot program using #AI to identify the most important points of an article and create bulleted summaries at the top of it … #Journalists will have the final say, deciding whether to use what the AI proposed.
[…]
“Gannett is also developing a generative AI tool that would take long-form stories and break them into various lengths and formats, like bullet points or captions on photos to create a slideshow.”
#USA #Journalism #Media #News #Gannett #Newspapers #Unions #Strikes: "Journalists for the largest newspaper chain in the country will walk off the job next week, in a series of strikes staged in part to protest the leadership of the company’s chief executive.
Hundreds of staffers for 24 Gannett newspapers, including the Arizona Republic, Austin American-Statesman and the Palm Beach Post, say they will not report to work for a day or two starting Monday, forfeiting pay and forgoing assignments ranging from city council meetings to high school sports championship games. At some papers, the strikes begin Tuesday.
Their aim, they say, is to call attention to budget cuts and put pressure on shareholders, who are expected to take up the issue of executive pay at a meeting Monday. Demonstrating journalists want shareholders to take a no-confidence vote against CEO Mike Reed, whom they fault for the company’s financial struggles."

If #Gannett is interested in anything, it isn't #journalism. But bad, in-debt ownership isn't the only problem facing #newspapers.

#USA #Journalism #News #LocalNews #Gannett: "When Alden attempted a hostile takeover in 2019, anyone who cared about local news was put in the unfamiliar position of rooting for Gannett. Heck, if you squinted hard enough, Gannett could almost feel like the good guy. (If only because people like to believe there is a good guy in their industry, somewhere or another.)
But “we’re better than Alden!” has its limits as a brand promise, and Gannett’s most recent annual report drives home the fact that no company has done more to shrink local journalism than it has in recent years. Let’s total up the damage — in raw numbers, if not in stories unbroken and facts not uncovered."

@jmadelman You didn't cancel your support of local #journalism. #Gannett did.
Brief history of community weekly #newspapers in #Columbus, #Ohio, USA.
A quote from the author: "it's actually insane how the local weeklies went from ubiquitous, well-read and profitable, to completely irrelevant, in the span of about 15 years. RIP. "

To be clear, I'm not singling out just my local newspaper (the CA is great and has excellent reporters). All of the #Gannett papers have the same big front-page autoplay video, and the same dark pattern of autoplaying "fuck you, non-subscriber, choke on this!" videos attached to each article.
Here, for example, are the Montgomery Advertiser and the Florida Times-Union. The video player, just visible enough to trigger autoplay, is right there, ready to start wasting bandwidth.
This is a thread about wasted #bandwidth, wasted #electricity, wasteful #UI, #autoplay videos, and #Gannett.
Just before I went to bed last night, I hit up the local #Memphis newspaper, the Commercial Appeal, to see if they'd posted a story about the passing of #GangstaBoo. They hadn't, yet, so I walked away from the computer and left the tab with their website open. Whoops.
When I woke up this morning, I had a surprise...

I wonder if #Gannett, or anyone else lately in the business of #downsizing, is opening alternative-to-Twitter channels.

I learned this week that the entire #augmentedreality team at #Gannett and #usatoday was laid off. This is the team that grew out of the #virtualreality #xr #journalism work I was involved with back in 2014.
Raise a glass to them, and rightly worry for innovation in local journalism in the digital age. This will add to the #newsdesert problem.

I wish I had the words that would give comfort and hope to all the #Gannett and #CNN journalists who lost their jobs, coworkers, benefits and pride yesterday and today. Layoffs are always terrible, but holiday layoffs are brutal and lack compassion.
If anyone needs anything, feel free to reach out.
Waiting for those tweets from fellow #Gannett employees from across the country saying they’ve been laid off 24 days before #christmas. This corporation sure is heartless. 💔

Local #newspapers under parent company #Gannett need to be bought out by those who believe in the power, importance and need for local community reporting. I don’t know how long these hiring freezes under Gannett are going to last, but it’s a problem for good #journalists.

I should have read a little more about Mastodon before attempting a proper #introduction. I am a former #Gannett editor and resident of #RochesterNY. I have spent the past 40 years in #Journalism, both in #print and #digital. Not sure how much I'll post on here, and I'll probably keep most opinions to myself for now. But feel free to engage as I get to know this #fediverse.
