The Highway Trust Fund, set up to maintain the #roads, grew. The fund derives its revenue from #gasoline and diesel #fuel sales taxes. Over time, its balance started to rise. By the 1980s, public spending on #highways fell to around 1% of GDP, financed entirely by the system’s own revenues from the public.
