I finished Shadow of the Torturer yesterday, the first entry in Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun. Feels very much like a "Part One" rather than a self-contained novel, but I do enjoy his writing style. So much fantasy writing can get bogged down by detail-focused imagery that the reading experience suffers. But Wolfe strikes a solid balance between world-building and actual plot. His incorporation of hard(ish) sci-fi elements was an interesting twist to the classic medieval-adjacent fantasy setting.

I'm not a huge fantasy reader, but I found this one to feel fairly natural in its presentation. Wolfe's politics are what I could only describe as stodgy or heterodoxic, but I think there's a latent string of classic left-libertarianism in there as well. Much like Whit Stillman in film --- another of my problematic favs --- he appears to be conservative in his fear of the future, and not so much in his fear of others.

Still, we'll see what awaits in the rest of the series.
