lol I forgot to post Target Earth, AKA Assault Suit Leynos! The beginning of a great series of ambitious run 'n' guns that floundered under different titles in different regions with each release. Just got added to the Switch NSO thingy today too, go check it out imo

And to cap it off, my miniature tower of power consisting of a Game Genie, a Sonic & Knuckles cart, and whatever the heck else you want to slap on top.
Thank you so much for putting up with this spam all month!
Now is time to the 68000 heart on fire!

Zero Tolerance may have the box art of a paranoid reactionary cold war Steven Seagal movie of the same era, but it's a bonafide sci-fi FPS on the Genesis! The play window is small and it's kind of slow & awkward, but it's impressive that it works as well as it does!

Okay I promise Steel Empire is the last STG on this last. It's not the best of the best but it's quite good, relatively forgiving, and has a recent remake on PC that I keep meaning to check out. Repro case here too.

The third iteration of Blue Rat Game! Depending who you ask, it's either the series peak or the beginning of a downward spiral! I've tried to like it a few times! Maybe one day I will like a Blue Rat Game! But today is not that day!

Finally wrapping up this thread tonight!
Next up is Sol-Deace, the cartridge version of the Mega CD's Sol Feace, add this to the list of all time great Mega Drive STGs! Treasured gift from my boy @_levipack@twitter.com when I started my disability leave in January. 🙏

Shinobi III is one of Sega's absolute best first party works of the 16-bit era. Top 3, maybe Top 1 depending on who you ask. We love a good crunchy action platformer, and this one might be an actual masterpiece.

This also came in today, the copy of Darius I ordered from Strictly Limited Games like, I dunno, a year ago or something? M2 developed this port from the arcade game in 2019 for the Mega Drive Mini based off a previously cancelled/unreleased conversion from the 80s!

This just came in from an Insert Credit forum member today, Namco's Burning Force is a really cool early refinement of Space Harrier's whole thing.

Okay look, the Genesis/Mega Drive has a whole lot of great STGs, or "shmups" if you're nasty. Vic Tokai's Whip Rush is one of them! And it's not too cruel!

I talked about Thunder Force III earlier in this thread but there's actually a TF III board inside this shell of Joe Montana's Sports Talk Football! I bought it this way! I don't know either! Best guess is a JP game in a US case to get around the plastic region lock.

Tecnosoft's Thunder Force II is in many ways, kinda the first Thunder Force. It's a Street Fighter type of situation. A classic STG that alternates between horizontal scrolling levels and top-down free moving levels akin to Namco's Bosconian.

Shinobi 2 gets overshadowed by Shinobi 3 (understandably, Shinobi 3 is a masterwork) but it's still a great 2D action game in its own right. Also, it's on the 6-Pak cart!

Rocket Knight Adventures is *excellent*. Again, Konami was unstoppable on the Mega Drive. RKA is a super mobile platformer that makes fantastic use of the hardware to just keep throwing fun new ideas at you.

Tiny Toons Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure is another game with a license I have no attachment to but you know what I do have an attachment to? Just about anything Konami was making in the 80s and 90s, particularly on the Mega Drive.

I'm not into the property in the slightest (sensing a trend here lol) and I'm not big on brawlers, but I have some strong nostalgia for TMNT 2 arcade port on NES, and Hyperstone Heist feels like an elaboration on that.

Ristar is . . . Ugh I just love it so much. Best thing Sonic Team ever produced? Without a doubt. Best platformer of the 90s? Potentially! Cutest lil guy to ever run around?? Maybe!

Fire Shark, the only home console conversion of Toaplan's masterful and violently difficult STG “鮫!鮫! 鮫!”

Ahh yes, what can be said about Rain Jerks that hasn't already been said by other people who reflexively call it Rain Jerks. Look up a longplay if you aren't familiar, it's cool as hell. Though controlling the sled separately still makes my brain sore. Repro case.

Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure is a cool exploratory platformer with really impressive pixel art from the artists that animated Fern Gully, and it contains the entire original Pitfall! This has been ported everywhere but the Genesis version feels like home for it imo.
