#Anthropology #archaeology #Human No #DNA yet but still of interest to #GeneticGenealogy On Netflix "Unknown Cave of Bones" about recent discoveries regarding Homo Naledi at the Rising Star Cave. No DNA work is mentioned but it was nice to see Anthropologist John Hawks throughout this episode. Youβll see him in this trailer: https://youtu.be/Qzj0_Y71c8o?si=jqL9eYOQ4YFnmOl9

@Barros_heritage @academicchatter @anthropology @archaeodons @histodons I have appreciated museum visits where skeletal remains or mummies are preserved. It is contextual. Gazing at the bones of a Saxon king in a church in England I am struck with awe. Are someone's ashes displayed in an urn more, or less thoughtful? As #GeneticGenealogy unleashes the mysteries of the past through #DNA analysis---I would like to think our ancestors might be okay with seeing them, with more clarity. If museums are exploiting remains for their shock value. Shame on them. But skeletons for education and science as long as thoughtfully displayed I appreciate.
Confiscated & inappropriately obtained collections should be scrutinized. If it was up to me I would collect DNA from them all.
I dream of an imaginery technology that can read DNA through 6 feet of earth. My desire to understand is greater than my desire to deny death. I think of Maui and those that perished in the inferno. Ashes to ashes...dust to dust. 1/

Genetic genealogists working with US law enforcement have routinely been searching genetic databases that were opted out of forensic searches violating DOJ guidelines (and covering their tracks). #GeneticGenealogy

@cbgenealogy Not good at all and potentially damaging to the future of DNA testing for genealogical purposes. It is hugely important that IGG work be undertaken in an ethical and responsible way #GeneticGenealogy
@OurAncestors I agree WATO at https://dnapainter.com/ is a fabulous tool ... as are all the other very useful tools and features there! #DNA #GeneticGenealogy #Genealogy #Geneadons

So, we've been able to trace most lines of my family back a couple of hundred years, at least, but we're faced with a mountain brick wall: my grandmother.
She was adopted as an infant into an LDS family. The adoptive family isn't the issue; the issue is that we have found NO DNA relatives of hers.
She thought she was French, then Scottish, then who knows. The only info we have is that her mother was young and died shortly after childbirth. He father was military?
Using DNAPainter, one of my WATO trees has generated the biggest odds I've ever seen it show. This strongest hypothesis was also my analysis. #GeneticGenealogy #Genealogy
I see FTDNA's sale is on now. Good deals. Autosomal unlock fee is just $10. #GeneticGenealogy
For those interested, Ancestry is currently turning around DNA results in about 3 weeks. I posted my cousin's test back on 6th July - results in today. Very impressive. #GeneticGenealogy
My cousin's DNA results are in. Science confirms we are cousins. I may be some time. #DNAtesting #GeneticGenealogy #Genealogy

Wishlist for improvements on FamilyTreeDNA:
Link all kits together EASILY
Link all kits to one tree *just spent 20 mins updating one kit with my direct ancestors but would have to manually do the same for several other immediate relations*
Quick way to mark lots of people dead in the tree

Good chat about DNA testing on Irish radio last week. https://www.rte.ie/radio/radio1/clips/22274724/ #GeneticGenealogy
@MelRootsNWrites thanks for mentioning #Scapple. I wasnβt familiar with it, although Iβve used #Scrivener for years. I think I will give it a try. As for making charts like you showed of DNA matches, I actually put them into #Reunion and generate charts that way. Sometimes into an Ancestry tree. I put the # of cM as a suffix after the name. Works pretty well and also Iβve preserved the data in tree format that can be exported as a Gedcom at any point. #GeneticGenealogy

@cbgenealogy I have made some progress there. I have one or two with trees but it usually comes down to messaging people who sometimes message back.
What irks me is that it takes a number of clicks to find out if a match has a tree or not (usually to find they don't). It would be so much easier if, for those that do have a tree, there was a symbol by their name e.g., a little tree or something.

A brief whine about 23andMe. Looking at a client's results. Not a single person has a tree attached to their profile. Some people have filled out grandparent locations, but it's not enough to go on! Might as well shout into the wind. #GeneticGenealogy #Genealogy
#genealogy #GeneticGenealogy #NorwegianAncestry #brickwalls #Telemark #VinjeNorwayPlace π³π΄π I am working on a new blog post after a hiatus. It has been ten years since a 40 year brick wall tumbled down. And it did so via #DNA On reflection this was such an act of generosity of those fellow researchers with Norwegian ancestry it is remarkable in itself. It may take me a few weeks to pull it all together. Stay tuned. #FamilyHistoryStories
